I started working for Beckett about six months ago as the Online Marketing Manager. Shortly after they showed me my desk, they showed me to the conference room where many hours of Beckett.com relaunch meetings would take place. I’ve got to say, it’s been a whirlwind of information. Not knowing anything about collecting, let alone sports, this has been a lot to take in. Fortunately, I’m surrounded by the most amazing group of people that are truly passionate about collecting, sports, and making your online experience even better than it is now. Here’s a few things I’ve learned so far:

  • Did you know that Beckett has over 20 titles under its belt including books? I was thinking, “Yea, I’ve heard of Beckett Baseball…this should be okay.” Good night! You can see why this company is the authority of pricing.
  • Did you know that a card graded ‘MINT’ doesn’t mean it’s fresh out of the pack? It’s all based on how it’s printed, the edges, the corners, and probably a ton of other things I can’t think of right now. These graders are locked up in a room like zoo animals looking at cards with those little things jewelers use!
  • Did you know that a jersey card actually has a piece of someone’s jersey in it? That’s insane! Who’s cutting up these jerseys? And who’s cutting George Washington’s hair?
  • Did you know that when fans in the crowd at a football game are holding up the letter ‘D’ and a Fence it doesn’t mean D-Gate? Honestly, I thought that the first time I saw it. Luckily, I found out a few years ago that it actually meant ‘Defense.’ I wouldn’t want to look like an idiot around all these sports gurus – guess I blew my cover with this blog!

In all seriousness, there are some really cool things coming down the pipe next year. Keep tuning in for updates as we start to give away more information. The excitement is mounting as planning and development continues. As we get closer to 2008, you can just feel the buzz in the office. I can’t wait for you guys to see what’s in store!

New Beckett Demo Derailed by Sick Programmer

We had severe thunderstorms in the Dallas area at drive time this morning. max_s.jpgMy commute to Beckett takes me through the Trinity River Elm Fork corridor of Carrollton and Farmers Branch, so you never know about street flooding on a morning like this.

Rainy Monday mornings are bad enough without a Cowboys loss on Sunday, but I was worried about missing an important meeting here at work. Co-Worker Brad, whose fingers are bloodied-stumps from working code for the new, soon-to-be launched Beckett.com site, was supposed to demo some site features this morning at 10.

Robust searches for cards, players and collecting information. Modified OPG features. Integrated buy/sell/trade platforms for collectors. I couldn’t wait. But I could wait — in traffic.

Finally got to my desk at 9:30, but Brad’s office was dark. Seems the poor guy was feeling puny today, so the New Beckett.com demo will have to wait for another day. I hate showing screen shots, but will report back with insider info once the meeting takes place.

Food, Cards Pushed Fellow Over Edge

small_spilled_mustard.jpgThe ALCS returns to Jacobs Field in Cleveland tonight, site of an ugly incident in Beckett history.

Well, it wasn’t anything heinous. But in 2001 during the Cleveland National, Upper Deck hosted a gathering of hobby glitterati, including some Beckett editors and pricing analysts, in a luxury box at The Jake. UD trotted out hot dogs, drinks and a slew of boxes of products to open. Pack wars prevailed. Gluttony ensued.

Did I mention that we have some passionate collectors who work at Beckett?

Well, the combination of food, people and baseball cards was a bit much for one of our employees in attendance. Former Co-Worker Rich became overly excited, barked at a few people, and eventually spilled hot dog condiments all over a box of cards before he calmed.

His response was, “It’s better to have a food-stained box than food-stained cards.” I guess that makes sense.
