Yes, I have a mannequin in my bedroom.

“He” happens to be wearing a baseball uniform from my collection. The uniform is a Chattanooga Lookouts uniform from the game-throwing scandal season of 1959. I have jerseys in my collection but I have only one complete uniform.  I couldn’t display the uniform in a jersey case or just hang it on the wall. I wanted to display it where people could see the entire uniform.

So I was searching for ways to display the uniform and it hit me, how about a mannequin? I mean they use them in department stores, right? It can’t be too unusual to have a mannequin in your house, right? Well, the wife is used to my strange collecting habits and the sometimes unusual items I have in my collection. I think the idea of me bringing home a mannequin and dressing him up in a baseball uniform didn’t really strike her as out of the ordinary for me.

So I found a mannequin. Apparently, like cars or designer pants, mannequins go out of style each year. Yeah, who knew? I buy a last year’s model at a discount price and take him home. As I drove home I looked in the rear-view mirror and saw a leg sticking up from the back. I really hoped I wouldn’t get pulled over that afternoon. I didn’t.

So he’s got a glove and a matching hat and he stands in the corner of my bedroom. I have to admit, it looks pretty good and the reaction people give is great! My kids still think it is funny and the in-laws think it’s creepy. Now if I could figure out how to display those game-used hats. Hey, how about heads on the wall? Hmmmmm….

Who’s Hotter: Brady vs. Peterson

Making a living writing about football cards is pretty darn cool. But fb213peterson.jpgsometimes, picking a player for the cover of Beckett Football can seem impossible.

This month, Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson rule the football card scene. Their hottest cards alternate in the first nine spots of this month’s Hot List. Brady owns a total of five spots, and Peterson claims six.

Brady’s cards are setting record sales numbers, while Peterson is breaking records on the field. He already holds the single-game rushing record for crying out loud, and he’s just a rookie! Brady’s the established superstar who is having the greatest season ever by a QB. Peterson’s is the exciting rookie who continues to have new cards released on the market, with the best coming in the next couple of months.

How do you choose?

A coin flip … Peterson.

Eenie meenie minie moe … Brady.

Pulling petals off a flower … Peterson.

Paper, rock, scissors … Brady.

We probably couldn’t have gone wrong with either one. They have both made a huge impact on the hobby over the last few months and will continue to do so. With the Patriots destroying everyone, Brady will likely have more chances down the road to be the cover boy. Peterson’s season will likely be over after Week 17, but he may be holding even more staggering rushing records.

Who’s hotter? You decide, because we’re stumped.
