bradycontenders.jpgBeckett’s resident PR guru Elon Werner got a call today from Smart Money magazine writer Janet Paskin inquiring about the investment potential of sports cards.

Elon forwarded the information to me and I followed up with Janet in an effort to be of some assistance to her story. The first two words out of my mouth when she answered the phone were either “Hello, Janet” or “Tom Brady.”

Janet peppered me with some really good questions and I did my best to provide comparable answers. One question in particular revolved around Brady’s 2000 Playoff Contenders RC. I told her it was currently valued at an astonishing $1,600, up from $800 just last month.

Intrigued by such a hefty price hike, I labored downstairs to reference the March 2001 issue of Beckett Football, which included our premiere Price Guide listing for 2000 Playoff Contenders. You know where Brady’s Contenders RC started? $20. That’s it. For perspective, consider that Ron Dayne debuted at $150 (now $40) and Jamal Lewis debuted at $250 (now $50).

Who knows where Brady’s best RC will ultimately settle? Just don’t try convincing those who were savvy enough to stockpile Brady Contenders RCs that football cards don’t have investment potential. A $200 investment of 10 Brady RCs in 2001 would be worth roughly $18,000 today.

Just something to think about.
