“Hey Joe, How About ‘Graphing Up My Cone?”

emily_and_her_ice_cream_cone_november_2002.jpgSitting here waiting for the Cowboys/Giants game to begin, I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of Joe Montana, who as I type is finishing up an autograph signing session at a small ice cream shop in Armonk, N.Y.

Last Licks shops have been the host to many NYC athlete signings, and even BGS has graded onsite amongst the sticky tables. But I am trying to imagine Montana, winner of four Super Bowls, pausing to reflect on the absurdity of the situation and wondering, “Am I actually sitting in an ice cream shop signing autographs?”

In spring 2007, three of us Beckett guys made a business trip to Topps in lower Manhattan. What jogged my memory about this was that the current reader voting for Beckett Baseball Best of 2007 was just launched. Vote here, now.

Back to our NYC trip. Several things stand out. Among them was the great hospitality shown to us by the Topps crew. Another was the fact that a framed poster of Beckett Baseball’s magazine cover from the previous year, which heralded Allen & Ginter as the 2006 product of the year, was sitting on a Topps conference room floor. As is the case in most fine galleries, the trophy shared display space with the official company vacuum cleaner, which looked the same vintage as 1951 Bowman.

The final and disturbing memory was that of the smallroomnyc.jpgHotel Ameritania, which Co-Worker Ted booked for its stellar location on Times Square. Problem was, once in the room, it took a greased shoe horn to move around. And the bathroom, well, you can see the clearance between commode and wall — that’s a box of 2007 Heritage lodged between the two. Didn’t matter, as water was turned off most of the time we were there.

I am happy to report that we saved $20 per room on that trip. Ever had a room like this?
