We got some early, early copies of the new Beckett Monthly overnighted to us this morning — the ink barely dry. Here’s a sneak page turning of this information-laden publication, available at hobby stores everywhere next week.
For more on the new magazine lineup, go here.
This is the new Beckett Monthly. I skipped multiple pages of pricing in the interest of time. Video time is just more than two minutes. – PH

Excellent snapshot of what’s coming to dealer shops and mailboxes in a few short days!
Comment by Cubsman23 March 4, 2008 @ 8:41 pmGreat work!
Looks good to me.
Comment by Olds March 4, 2008 @ 11:27 pmLooks Great, cant wait to get the first issue with everything all in one magazine! Now that that’s done, how about a preview of the new website?
Comment by Matt March 4, 2008 @ 11:49 pmNice to see the new changes actually occur, unlike UD’s “supposed” changes to thier redemption program. Keep up the great work guys!
Not bad. Looks good. It will be shipped in March correct?
Comment by President Obama March 5, 2008 @ 3:59 amWow, looks like a lot of great content in there!
Comment by Shawn March 5, 2008 @ 8:42 amHand model . . . hmmmmmm, ok. We’ll put that in next year’s budget along with chandeliers for the bathroom stalls and daily truffles in the breakroom.
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 5, 2008 @ 9:02 amI like the opportunity of seeing the new magazine and I would like to see this done EVERY month before they ship so we could tell what articles will be in there.
Comment by David Luebke ( Dave's Comics, Richmond Va.) March 5, 2008 @ 11:12 amPepper, please also mention having the bathroom stalls come all the way down to the floor.
Comment by Brandon Caballero March 5, 2008 @ 12:46 pmwow, looks AWESOME.
now i don’t have to buy the baseball, football and hockey separate.
i can get all of them in one magazine.
lots of reading.
nice.
Comment by Orly March 5, 2008 @ 2:54 pmWow, Beckett is publishing a Tuff Stuff magazine now. There should be people at Beckett fired over this decision. Only listing card pricing for the current years sets.. niiiice, so I’ll only get updates on everything else once every two months now.. Hopefully a new company will step up to the plate and take Beckett’s place. Congrats Beckett, way to take an already bad publication and and make it even worse.
Comment by bob March 6, 2008 @ 9:20 amBob, maybe Beckett Sports Card Collector is not for you. BUT, you can get updates on everything else EVERY DAY by using the online price guide at beckett.com. We’ve got something to fit every collector’s needs.
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 6, 2008 @ 9:40 amI’m pretty excited about this. I really like the addition of the wrestling card price guide. And while I am not an avid collector of anything not baseball, it’ll be nice to read the articles about how markets in those respective sports are doing. My question: How in-depth is the price guide section in this magazine? Is it like the current (former) Beckett, or like the Beckett Plus product?
Comment by Newspaperman March 6, 2008 @ 10:25 amI hope you guys at Beckett are smart enough to put the price of the magazine the same in Canadian funds now that our dollar is at par with yours and not overcharge like most US magazines do. It’s a disgrace and a total ripoff !!!
Comment by Jean-Pierre Falardeau March 6, 2008 @ 10:37 amFortunately I am no longer representing Beckett so I can say this with a big smile on my face…. Please stop comparing Beckett’s new monthly multi-sport to Tuff Stuff. There appears to be way more market watch content, hot lists and information that is useful to the collector/investor as well as information that is interesting to the casual collector and OH MY GOSH there is information that just might lure some new people into the hobby in the Beckett magazine. Those are all critical elements that were/are consistently lacking in other collecting publications.
This looks great and Pep, doing a video preview was a genius idea.
Comment by Elon Werner March 6, 2008 @ 12:05 pmI think this change is needed and it looks fantastic.
Also, I think it’s kind of funny that more people are in approval of the magazine now rather than when it was first announced.
Comment by Andrew Harner March 6, 2008 @ 1:48 pmWell said, Elon. The argument that we’re turning our monthly publication in to a Tuff Stuff knockoff is a farce. Pardon the potential arrogance of this statement, but Beckett has set a (the) standard in pricing and established the precedent for Hobby coverage. Sure, the magazine format has changed, but let’s not mistake the metamorphosis as a sign that we’re throwing our hands up in the air, abandoning the concept of quality.
We’re steadfast in our effort to live up to and exceed the elevated and lofty standards that we’ve set for ourselves. By no means does this change suggest that we’ve given up on the hobby or the folks who make up the collecting world. We’re not turning our backs on anybody. In fact, we’re starting to open the eyes in the back of our heads. As Elon mentioned, the new format offers a wider array of information that might “lure some new people into the hobby.” With more universal appeal, the new monthly will help nourish future generations of collectors…all the while maintaining the same level of quality information for the hardcore collector.
We’re evolving to improve upon what we’ve already created.
Calm down. Change is good.
Comment by tolentinotown March 6, 2008 @ 2:40 pmJean-Pierre
Comment by Cubsman23 March 6, 2008 @ 2:52 pmWe are working on making the change to the Canadian price but it’s a very complicated process. I’m currently talking with all our distributors to make the market correction but it takes some time for the process to get approved in all channels. In the meantime, enjoy the new Beckett and just know that we haven’t forgot about you north of the border.
Elon looks very dapper in his tie! Thanks for the post – I agree with you – this is much different than your average Tuff Stuff.
Comment by Cubsman23 March 6, 2008 @ 2:53 pmI THINK THIS NEW BECKET’S SUCKS I DON’T CARE ABOUT BASKETBALL – HOCKEY-GOLF – FOOTBALL AND MOST OF ALL AUTO RACING. I WILL NOT RENEW
Comment by BARRYBAT March 6, 2008 @ 4:53 pmMY BECKET’S IF THIS IS THE WAY IT WILL COME
Great content, we are very excited to be carrying the new verison.
Comment by SportscardOutlet March 6, 2008 @ 5:50 pmDoes typing in all caps indicate that the writer is yelling?
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 6, 2008 @ 6:05 pmDEFINITELY PEPPER!!! I’VE HEARD THAT ADDING EXCLAMATION MARKS JUST DON’T DO THE TRICK THESE DAYS!!!!!!!!
Comment by tolentinotown March 6, 2008 @ 9:01 pmHi guys,
Comment by sid tuck March 7, 2008 @ 3:33 amThe first thing I did before you reviw was to see if Beckett and Tuff stuff had be purchase by the same company. I researched it and found I was all wet, and that I had made an error, your still owned by Apprise.
So I hope this works out, but I have been buying Beckett Baseball for so long,it may take time for me to adjust.
I never could adjust to Tuff Stuff before because Beckett was the premier magazine for baseball pricings.I hope you keep yout identity, you have made changes to a master piece.
Sid Tuck
Moore S.C.
Thanks for the kind words, Sid. Let me assure that Beckett remains the premier magazine for baseball pricing (and basketball, football, hockey, racing and others, to boot). What we’ve done with BSCM is add another spectacular piece to our arsenal that complements perfectly our existing roster — kind of like what the Patriots did by adding Randy Moss last season.
We’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on the new magazine when it comes out. Now as always, the more great feedback from you, the better we can make our products to serve you.
Comment by Tracy Hackler March 7, 2008 @ 8:50 amWith that Patriots analogy – does that mean you guys are going to lay an egg with the last issue of the year? Who gets to be Junior Seau walking off the field sobbing? Does someone walk out with one page left?
Maybe I took that a little bit too far
Oh, and the magazine looks cool too. I’m not sure if there was any commentary on the video, since I don’t have speakers at work, but it looks like a lot of content, which is very good.
Comment by thehamiltonian March 7, 2008 @ 9:14 amGood point, thehamiltonian.
In that case, consider it the 1997 Broncos adding Neil Smith.
Comment by Tracy Hackler March 7, 2008 @ 12:41 pmSo, is it still out on the second Tuesday of the month? (Saw someone said they already had it on the boards…)
Comment by Olds March 9, 2008 @ 2:13 amBeckett is a new card hype machine. Jack the price on new trash and watch jimmy teenager buy this junk and a year later every this is worthless. Stay VINTAGE go Tuff Stuff.
Comment by Eric March 9, 2008 @ 5:21 amI like the new format, but was very disappointed to not see pricing on the biggest sport in the world market – soccer.. I know that it is not number one here, but Upper Deck is making MLS soccer cards, but not golf, wrestling, or tennis. I am sorry, but as a collector for over 40 years, I do not understand. However, overall, keep up the good work.
Comment by Kent Garnett March 9, 2008 @ 1:17 pmDoes this mean the quarterly is no long avialable, and if so how do we go about finding prices of older cards we’ve collected? Whats the cost of the new version. Why did you decide to take this route, Beckett starting to fill the eco. grunch? I only collect baseball and football (which by the way is your major readers) sounds like i”ll be paying more and getting less
Comment by Poppie March 9, 2008 @ 6:51 pmI love Beckett, I love reading the storys and the articles but in this age of the closing card shop, and internet sellers & ebay being king, when are you going to start putting realistic pricing into your magazine? I can get 99% of the cards priced in Beckett for 25-33% of what your magazine lists them at. When are we going to “Get Real” in your pricing. I realize you are a “Price Guide” but should the guide give me a realistic idea of what I should get for a card if I sell it, or what I should pay if I buy it. When is the “Price Guide” going to adjust to the realization of the Market.
Also when are you going to start providing pricing for low print-run cards. You say in your magazine that cards numbered under 50 or 25 copies a card are to scarce to price. Let’s get serious, There is a ton of secondary market information on these cards. While Major Stars are harder to price. Commons cards #/50 or less regularly sell for $1-2. Minor Stars sell for $2.50-$5. Heck there is even pricing information for 1/1 Printing Plates. Generally common players sell for $10-20. Minor stars sell in the $15-$30 range.
Let’s face it. Beckett was started by Dr. Beckett to be a Price Guide. Not the Hobby Magazine it has turned into today.
Comment by OC March 9, 2008 @ 9:05 pmTo say that I am very disappointed with the New Beckett design would be the understatement of the century. I have always looked to Beckett Baseball for guidance and current pricing for basebal products. For the past few years I have watched as Beckett has started on a downhill spiral. If I want hockey or racing info, I’ll buy a hockey or racing magazine!! That was my whole purpose for buying Beckett. Now they decide to put everything together in one magazine, which does NOT cover the same amount of baseball material. I shouldn’t have to go to the website to get pricing info. That is the purpose of buying the magazine. Beckett is compromising quality for quantity. Poor, poor choice Beckett!! When my subscription ends, so does my relationship with Beckett.
Comment by topcop March 10, 2008 @ 1:45 pmTopcop,
Beckett Baseball magazine isn’t gone, it’s just six times a year instead of 12. You can get the 200-page Beckett Baseball magazine every other month — that’s twice as much baseball card pricing as in the previous version.
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 10, 2008 @ 2:03 pmWill this incluede the return of glossy paper
Comment by Beckett Reader March 10, 2008 @ 7:45 pmthis mag is very stooopid…only have 1 year worth of pricing.. WFT????i wont be redoing my subscription.. good going beckett you just lost a customer.. with many more to follow
Comment by bazookajojo March 10, 2008 @ 8:19 pmThe new mag is great since i collect mult-sports. I wish we couild get a high-low pricing on the cards so we could see how the cards fare though the year or years.
Comment by paul sprague March 11, 2008 @ 10:46 amAs to the stalls in the restroom lowering them to the floor will cause problem for cleaning crew to hot hose the floor and walls…bigger drains would be nice.
hopefully that your box pulls will be better than the pulls from the drains. lol
Bad, very bad. I have subscribed to Beckett BB/BKB and used to subscribe to BFB since ‘99. Horrible decisions by the New Regime at beckett. First the glossy, then the ‘06 RC Rolodex, and now this one year pricing. I am stuck with my remaining issues I paid for BB/BKB with an inferior product. I am not getting what I paid for. New world values being thrown down our throats by noobies who probably have never collected. Beckett’s image, trustworthiness, and quality is now bunk IMO.
Comment by 95% March 11, 2008 @ 12:50 pmI used to enjoy getting my monthly issues and leafing through each and every issue.
This I cannot. This is not Beckett. This is a greedy and manipulative regime running this fine publication into extinction. Just as the card companies forced out DonRuss and then issued DR like products. Isn’t it bad enough that they destroyed the hobby, now you are destroying what used to be THE staple of collecting?
Another arrogant and self centered effort to crap on the people who actually keep you working.
Thanks for not posting my comments. Hope you enjoy the extra wasted paper in your warehouse in the future when original subscriptions run out.
Comment by 95% March 11, 2008 @ 1:29 pmThanks for nothing. Didn’t know a product I ordered and paid for could be altered and offered as the same is ethical.
I will not be renewing. Surprised you didn’t use the all too easy/fabricated excuse of going GLOBAL to back your change.
Maybe you’ll have more time to go bust some high end products in the back room of some dealer’s shop with some of your shareholders/CEO’s.
hey beckett, seems like the mag is on the fence w/ alot of subscibers feeling good and bad about the whole thing. from the looks of it it seemed almost like a good idea except for the lack of pricing content. i am not excited about this and as many of your subscibers have said it really does look alot like TUFFSTUFF. i wish that you could get the online pricing for the same price as this frankenstien of a magazine. even if you could get three priceguides for the price of this magazine. think about it in your thinktank and help us out.
Comment by mrsande March 11, 2008 @ 5:28 pmJean Pierre – the Canadian price should stay higher than the U.S. price. The Canadian and U.S. currency might have equaled in price, but Beckett still has to spend a lot to ship the magazines to Canada with the $4/gallon diesel or whatever it is along the way! ;)
As for Beckett/Tuff Stuff comparisons brought up by others, we’ll soon see who can put up or shut up. My first multisport beckett will be here in a couple weeks or so. I just subscribed to a year of Tuff Stuff because they were offering me a ridiculous cheap 1-year subsription rate. At the end of my subscriptions, if there is a magazine I like (Beckett or Tuff Stuff), I will subscribe to it or I’ll do without either one if I end up finding both lame or if either magazine jacks up the yearly rate “just because” they are multisport now. Baseball is the only sport I collect (other than Topps Football factory sets each year as my only foray beyond baseball).
Comment by Roberts. March 11, 2008 @ 10:53 pmhorrible decision on becketts part!! I only collect football and this new guide only contains like 4 or 5 pages of football pricing and ONLY has current year sets!! As a dealer this forces me to not only buy the monthly so I can get up to date new card pricing, BUT, now I also have to purchase the Plus magazine so I can get current prices on all of my non-current year cards!!! Talk about squeezing every (*&*(& penny out of us you can!!! Not only that but now realistically football cards that arn’t NEW releases only have 2 opportunities to go up in value because as we all know the plus magazine only comes out once every two months and the regular football season is only 17 weeks long. I see this causing all non-current year football card prices to become very stagnate. As a dealer I give this beckett a major 2 thumbs down and hope the format is either changed back very soon or they extend the new format to include prior year price listing and drop some of the fluff, which is mostly what this huge magazine is. Somewhere along the link Beckett seems to have forgotten what they are, a price guide.. not a fluf guide! So far in my shop I’ve sold one of them and heard nothing but complaints from people about this format and had several customers break it open to check it out only to hand it back to me and say no thanks.
Comment by tim March 12, 2008 @ 7:06 amI wish I could run beckett for a day so I could fire everyone working there who had a part in the decision to change to this new format, it’s absolute TRASH! Only listing pricing for current year cards, what is up with that?? Now I only get to see price changes for everything that’s prior years every other month. You definatly lost me as a customer, I wouldn’t buy this Tuff Stuff in Beckett wrapping if you priced it at a dollar. Wait, Tuff Stuff is actually better than this waste of paper because at least they list prior year sets. For all of you beckett people who keep saying this isn’t a Tuff Stuff because it has more info like Hot Lists, etc. here’s a clue, we don’t give a ^(&* about hot lists, they change from day to day, we buy it 99 percent for the pricing, that’s what the guide is used for. Actually since I can get prior year pricing IN a Tuff Stuff I think I’ll start buying those and watch you jokers go out of business. You’re really gonna get raked over the coals over this decision and if you don’t believe me just wait and see. Give dealers a couple months when the annual shows get going and the Beckett name is going to suffer a huge backlash.
Comment by steve March 12, 2008 @ 7:19 amGuess what, I can’t get online pricing while I’m walking around at a freakin card show! And no you don’t have something to fit every collectors needs! Notice how the comments are getting more negative now that people are actually seeing for themselves what a piece of junk this magazine is! It’s a cheap version of a Tuff Stuff without as much pricing. Beckett should be ashamed to call this a price guide as the majority of the magazine isn’t even card price listings anymore. Fire all editors and staff and get some people who know what this magazine SHOULD be!!!
Comment by bob March 12, 2008 @ 7:33 amAs much as you say the comparisons to Tuff Stuff aren’t valid, the comparisons still exist and they do apply. This is nothing more than a publisher’s version of New Coke. Hopefully, you will go back to the Old Coke version. I understand why you did this from a publishing standpoint… Printing several different issues dedicated to each sport is too costly, but combining those issues into one issue, with less focus on more sports (wrestling and golf), has the dealers in my area pretty upset. The magazine isn’t selling, from all I’ve heard.
I’m a one sport collector, so I never bought the other monthly guides. I will not be buying magazine this either. And I’m not buying your excuses/reasoning either. I never heard a single person say, I wish Beckett would put all of the various price guides into one magazine, cut back so far back on the pricing so that only one year for each sport can fit, add in wrestling and golf pricing, and jack up the price. Apparently, you have. I have bought the OPG for the last two years, but as one of the posters above said, you cannot take the OPG with you to a cardshow. You can’t even take the new price guide to a show if you want to look up something outside of the current year.
Comment by New Coke March 12, 2008 @ 9:51 amIt seems there is some confusion with a few people:
Beckett Baseball and its one-sport sister publications still exist on a 6-time per year basis and in a more robust “PLUS-like” form.
Beckett Sports Card Monthy is a NEW product and will stand on its own merits and weaknesses, and be improved with every issue. But to compare it to Beckett Baseball or Beckett Basketball, etc., is a red herring and only serves to confuse the real issue.
Beckett Sports Card Monthly is not meant to substitute for Beckett Baseball/Basketball, etc., any more than Beckett Hockey is a substitute for Beckett Football. Each is a member of the Beckett print product mix and is intended to serve a different customer, with some overlap of course.
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 12, 2008 @ 10:19 amYou took away from our monthly publication all of the prior year price listings.. you took away something we had before, now we can only get prior year pricing every other month which is absurd! Nobody is comparing Hockey to Football other than you in your statement. You have taken the monthly football, baseball, basketball and hockey publications and converted them into a monthly all-sport publication while dropping all prior year card price listings, therefore a comparison is absolutly valid. Saying the others still exist is true, but they are no longer offered on a monthly basis. If you’ve ever read a beckett magazine you would see that each and every month card prices can change, now we won’t see those market reflections every month in an actual publication unless they are current year products. This new format could have worked if you didn’t screw it up by dropping the prior year listings, but as it is it fails miserably. Basically you’re saying that if a card is more than a year old it’s not important enough in the hobby to warrant monthly card price changes which is also absurd, i’ve seen players, i.e. tom brady who’s cards have gone up in consecutive months, I hardly think you’re taking market activity like that into account when this new format was dreamed up. Take a hint and put the prior year pricing in the newly format piece of trash and maybe you’ll have a winner on your hands, until then I’ll never buy one.
Comment by bob March 12, 2008 @ 11:13 amI don’t think anyone is confusing the new All Sport Beckett with the bi-monthly Plus version, OR the old monthly one-sport magazines. I think we are generally upset that our sport no longer gets the same amount of coverage now.
Take football for example. You only have the current season in the issue. From the pre-season until the Pro Bowl is approximately 6 months. That’s just 3 issues of the Plus version, and 6 issues of the monthly, but since it takes approximately 2 months for a new set to be listed, that means it may be up to 2 months before it hits the All-Sports, and 4 months before it’s listed in the Plus version! What about players Tony Romo and Ryan Grant who come out of nowhere to get intensely hot all of a sudden? Your guides will not… no, CANNOT keep up with the volitile market. By the time the corrected pricing is reflected in the Plus version, the season is over.
Honestly, this was a bad move on Beckett’s part. I’m not sure why specifically they felt they needed to change the format, but all of the dealers I have spoken with have said something along the lines of, “I hope they change it back soon,” or “It won’t last,” or “I haven’t sold as many (if they sold any at all)”. I know they won’t, but I’m certainly hoping Beckett changes back to their old format and fast. I hated New Coke, and I hate the new format.
Comment by New Coke March 12, 2008 @ 11:57 amSix times a year doesn’t necessarily mean bi-monthy. For instance, Beckett Football ships four consecutive months from August through November — during the football season.
We really appreciate the enthusiasm, guys. Seems that the print price guides are as relevant as ever, according to your passionate opinions. That’s a good thing.
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 12, 2008 @ 1:21 pmI just received my Beckett all sport in the mail yesterday and it is awful. What upsets me is that my subscription was renewed with this trash instead of receiving the bi-monthly versions of football and basketball which I already subscribe to. I want to see the older cards priced since I don’t keep up to date with the newer cards. Sure it may have more info than tuff stuff, but common it is a pure ripoff that is more up to date. If I wanted this I would buy tuff stuff and most likely I will. I would rather support an out of date publication than this refuse. Hope a new company swoops in and picks up the pieces, because to me it is a train wreck. We should of at least had a choice of what we receive. If I wasn’t clear this sucks.
Comment by Philbert March 13, 2008 @ 6:54 amPhilbert,
Comment by Pepper Hastings March 13, 2008 @ 9:05 amCall us at 972.991.6657 or email brichardson@beckett.com with your request and we will convert your subscription to Beckett Football/Basketball. No problem whatsoever.
Being a football only collector myself , I would have no use for this new product . Best of luck , it really does look like a glorified TS . I would like to see and hear some of the changes (if any ) that the rocket scientists at Beckett have planned for the one sport only subcriptions . Like Football Monthly . Since the amount of magazines are cut in half ( 6 ) I would expect to see a decrease in the subscription price for the consumer ( me ). One; it is not being shipped every month ( S/H ) . 2 ; Less overhead for Beckett ( Adv. etc……. ) Are there going to be any new sections of interest that you will be bringing to the table for these issues ?? Also would like to know the changes you have added to your staff including all the new graders , authenticators , you picked up from GAI during their vacation . Also , what kind of incentives for this issue and the Football Seasonnally (6) will you be bringing to the Chicago Show in late march , for consumers like me to be attracted or lured to your enlightment ?
Comment by Irish Bear March 15, 2008 @ 11:11 amThe new monthly was not what I paid for. I paid for a baseball magazine. I want my magazine back, the monthly sucks. I will not renew my subscription unless you go back to a monthly magazine. We need the monthly price list to buy and sell cards.
Comment by R marshall March 16, 2008 @ 8:12 am
