A Hobby Legend Bids Farewell

For almost 22 years, Beckett Media’s Pepper Hastings has been a constant asset to this great hobby of ours. But beginning next week, he’s moving on to a new opportunity outside the collectibles industry.

Before he could get out of here, he sat down for a quick “exit” interview.

The third employee in the history of Beckett, Hastings has admirably and professionally served seemingly every role in the last two decades, from editing to pricing to grading to subscriptions to direct sales and everything in between.

A hobbyist himself who specializes in collecting the nuances of the folks inside and outside Beckett HQ, Hastings is an avid select-level youth baseball coach, a tireless JFK Conspiracy buff and a collecting icon.

In an industry that loves nothing more than an authentic, truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece, Pepper’s been on the Hot List since Day One.

Making of the Almanac

We pride ourselves on high-tech solutions to pricing software and collecting tools. So when Gean Paul Figari starts crunching the files for the upcoming Beckett Almanac book, he uses some Puruvian ingenuity.

To oversimplify, the files have to process continuously to flow the text onto the pages. We are talking about more than 100MB of files. In a world of iTunes and digital photos, this doesn’t seem like much. But we are talking about 100MB of TEXT only (card listings and pricing), NO PHOTOS. Huge, huge text files for the 1,000+ page book.

When left alone, computers go into sleep mode. Gean Paul figured that if he put the mouse on a speaker, played music just loud enough and used a stapler to keep the mouse from sliding off, the vibration from the music keeps the computer “awake.”

I’m a collecting fool (idiot), just not sure why

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to do some garage and closet clean out. With two growing boys in the house, space is becoming more of a premium.

Having been a collector since the ‘70’s, I tend to keep everything. I am optimistic that everything that is not valuable may be so at some point. Or, it is a card I might need given the opportunity to get an autograph in the future. So in my mind, EVERYTHING has a reason to be kept. Oh sure, on those two rare occasions when I moved, I did chuck a few boxes of 1988 Topps baseball commons, and some 1990’s Pro Set. But I sure didn’t do it without culling through the boxes and pulling out all the star cards. Hey, even a 1991 Score Cal Ripken is worth keeping right?

To get to the point, I did something this weekend I’ve never done. I threw out a factory set. I chucked a complete set! Along with some 1991-92 hockey commons and some 1990 Football cards, in the trash went a 1988 Donruss Factory set. Sure, I could try to get $4 for it on eBay, or even get the Glavine RC graded. But why bother? The trip to the post office will cost me that in gas! So, if you are looking for some 1991 Fleer and OPC Premier baseball, 1993-94 Classic Draft Picks Hockey, some 1992 Score Football, 100 card lots of 1990-91 Score HK Karl Dykhuis, Jimmy Waite, Peter Ing and 1990 Topps BB Jeff Jackson Rookies, a 1989 Fleer set (minus the Griffey, sorry), and the 1988 Donruss Factory set, they can be found deep within the Dallas dump.

I feel like a new man. I’ve kicked the crack habit! I have thrown cards away that may have value?

Now looking back on this I realize every one of you agree, I’m an idiot. Some of you think so because I shouldn’t have done it. But I’d bet most of you feel I should have done it years ago! I look forward to hearing your opinions. Is it OK to trash cards?

Wife of Hobby Pioneer Kit Young passes away

Patti Young, wife of hobby pioneer Kit Young and an industry icon herself, passed away unexpectedly Monday evening in San Diego. The Youngs together developed one of the first sports card catalog businesses, Kit Young Cards, nearly three decades ago when the industry was in its infancy. Kit Young is recognized as one of the first full-time sports card dealers.Kit and Patti Young

In 1986, Kit and Patti had a vision of creating a trade show in Hawaii to attract friends and industry leaders. “The Kit Young Show” as it still is commonly referred, grew into the only annual event which assembled retailers, distributors, manufacturers and every sport league’s licensing bodies. The Young’s operated the show for nearly 20 years selling it to Krause (now F+W) Publications.

While the trade show and the business bears Kit’s name, Patti’s fingerprints are all over their success. If a person knew Kit, he also knew Patti. “Kit and Patti” were inseparable in name and persona. Kit and Patti have been a buying fixture at the front door of The National Sports Collectors Convention for years. At the Hawaii Trade Conference, Patti was the welcoming co-host who worked hard to make friends out of strangers and know everyone’s names. She took great pride in bringing everyone together and making sure they got value, and felt valued, at “their” conference.

Adam Martin of Dave and Adam’s Card World recalled, “When I was a newcomer to this business many years ago, I was invited to their home for the post-conference event. Being a non-golfer, I was left alone with Patti. She treated me as if I was a member of the family. She would do this to everyone. She made you feel as if you had known her forever, even just moments after you first meet.

Jim Beckett, founder of Beckett Media said, “I was blessed to know her; she will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies go out to Kit and extended family, which is how Patti made many of us in the hobby feel.”

Bob Wilke, Executive of The National Convention and former MC of the conference commented, “Most of us who know Kit and Patti also know what an easy target, and a great sport, Kit is for taking shots that are aimed at him. I remember one year at the Hawaii Trade Conference, Kit was approaching his 50th birthday and Patti asked Mike Berkus and I to do a small roast of Kit as a surprise at one of the morning sessions. Patti even helped us create some of the jokes. One of the bits included a before and after picture of Kit. The before was a picture of him as a one-year-old child. The after picture was the same photo, but Patti helped us draw a beard on his baby face. Needless to say, the audience loved it. Patti’s infectious laugh, her big hugs and her love and affection for those in our hobby, will be sorely missed.

Most collectors may not have known Patti, but they have surely felt the impact of her contributions. She will be deeply missed. Services will be held this Saturday.
