The Beckett Blog

Organ-eaze

Ugh, I am sorry for the horrific pun.

Today class, we are going to cover a bit of the Organize category, specifically “My Organize” and related. If you were paying attention to the last “New Beckett.com” post, then you would know that organize is the orange-labeled category. If you were not paying attention, that’s OK, now you know. (Also – everything dealing with the new Beckett.com is filed under, “Top Secret,” so you can always click that category to see all that has been previously posted.)

– Here are two screenshots we will be talking about today–

Feel free to ask if you are not sure how to enlarge these, or anything else you don’t know for that matter. Remember, there are NO stupid questions, just people who stupidly don’t ask questions!

OK, the first (left) screenshot is an example showing how easy it is to organize everything, once you have added it to “My Organize,” (which is also easy).

By the way, think of “My Organize” as a table, and you are putting stuff on it. You do a search and you can add whatever you want to your table, just by clicking on “Add to my Organize,” you will see that everywhere on the new site.

You can add entire sets, select some cards from a set, select certain cards from an individual player, add all the cards from an individual player, one card from one manufacturer, ect. Whatever you can think of…

Now, whatever you have added to your table is in front of you, ready to organize however you want to or need to.

In this example, you can see where I added various football cards from 2005 Absolute Memorabilia, 2005 Donruss Elite, 2005 Score, and 2007 Absolute Memorabilia. There are 7 pages, 151 total cards, in “My Organize.” When you add new stuff to the “table” (My Organize), it will show up as “Recently Added,” but this is stuff added a while back, so “Recently Added” shows zero in this example.

Of course, we will only be dealing with what we can see in this screenshot for now.

You can make different collections, label them and color-code them how you want. Think of each one of “My Collections” as a drawer. You can have infinite drawers that you sort the stuff from your table (“My Organize”) into. (By the way, you do not have to put stuff from the “table” into a “drawer” if you don’t want to, it stays on the table as long as you need it to, so you can sort (organize) a bit, and then come back the next day and do more.)

You can see “My Collections,” on the left side of the screenshot. Note that there is a (currently empty) “Manny Ramierez Cards,” collection. You can have whatever collection you want, it’s up to you. You can call it what you want, set it up how you want…anything.

You could have a “Houston players” collection, with Astros, Texans, and Rockets in it. You could have a “Ryan Braun’s minor league coaches” collection, or a “2005 Upper Deck & Topps football” collection. I am pretty sure I am going make people sick since I keep saying, “it’s up to you,” or “whatever you want,” but it’s the best way to explain it. There is no limit to how you can organize your collection, and my examples here are very small and very basic.

Now, it’s very easy to add something or somethings to each collection. For instance, I want to add all my Manny Ramirez cards on my table (“My Organize”) to my “Manny Ramirez Cards” drawer (collection).

The “Search My Organize” bar can bring up every Manny Ramirez card I have added to the table, (“My Organize”). Then I can check the box next to each one I want to add, or if there are quite a few, I can click “Select: Page,” or “Select: All” (blue text under the “Search My Organize” bar). If you want to clear what you have selected, use the “Select:None,” to clear all you have checked and start over.

(Hopefully that’s simple enough, but please ask questions!)

Ok, you have selected the cards (this is not in the screenshot), now hit the “Actions” button, which will bring up some options, one of which is add to “Manny Ramirez Cards” collection.

(Really, it will have all the collections you have created, so it depends on what you have done, but in a nutshell, you can add whatever you select from the table (My Organize) to whatever drawer (collection) you want. If you suddenly decide on a new collection, you can make one right then as well. You don’t have to stop, go make a new collection and then re-select everything for that collection.)

Got it? I hope so, because I am worried if I am making sense. Ask, and if I don’t know, someone smarter does and I will ask them!

Now, let’s take a quick break from the tables and drawers and jump around a little, to the “Views.” Those options are next to the “Actions” and “Options” buttons (much more on all that those two can do will be coming later).

This screenshot is in “Default” (list) view. There is also the “Gallery” view, which is just what it sounds like, pictures of the card along with the info from the “Default” view that you see now.

(A quick hint since we are talking about the Gallery – uploading card images is a good thing to do, I’d consider taking some time to scan cards that do not have images in our system already…starting now. Be ready to upload when the time comes, and you will be ahead of the game. This is a Behind the Scenes exclusive tip….shhhhh!) Wait, scratch that, tell everyone…I need to up the traffic in here.

Ok, with that out of the way, there is also the “Trade” view. For this, open the second screenshot, the one on the right.

Now you can begin to put all this together a bit better.

See the various columns? (Own, Keep, Want, Trade, Buy Price, Sell Price, Beckett Value) I hope they are pretty self-explanatory.

In my opinion, this is where the new site really, really gets good. One of the options you will have is a “fill” option (not showing right now). With the fill option you can quickly fill in columns.

Since there are infinite ways a person could have a collection, we will do a real simple one. If you want to either buy, or trade for, one of each of these 2008 Upper Deck Baseball cards showing on the screenshot, you would go to “Select Page,” which will put a check mark next to each card on this page, and with the “fill” option, you can put a “1″ in each slot of the “Want” column. To be clear, you can make a (whatever) collection, and you do not have to own the card…you can have a collection made completely of stuff you want…or need (my wants and needs really vary, it depends if you hear them from me…or my wife.)

Of course, you may want 2, 7 or 13, there…you may want to leave it at “0″….again, up to you. You can fill in whatever column you want, with whatever it is you want. The “Trade” column shows you, and CAN show the rest of the Beckett community (more on that later) what you are willing to trade or sell.

This screenshot is of my “2008 Upper Deck Baseball” collection, and let’s look at #239, Ken Griffey, Jr.

I have 4 of that card, and I want to keep 2, so, since I have “Trade” checked, people will (can) know I have 2 to trade or sell.

Now, look at #67, Albert Pujols. I have one, and “Trade” is clicked, so I will trade or sell it, but, look over at the “Sell Price,” I am willing to sell it for $1.50, which is actually under the $2.00 “Beckett Value” (visible to online price guide subscribers).

Once again, to beat a dead horse, it’s up to you how to fill in each of the columns.

Now, I kept saying the cards you have for trade CAN be visible to the rest of the Beckett community. Here is where the REALLY good part comes in, you can set each individual collection to private, or public, and it will only cost you $149 each month, payable directly to my personal Paypal account.

OK, just seeing if you were paying attention, it’s free, all of these organization tools are free!

(But hey, don’t worry, feel free to contact me if you still want to send me $149 every month, just kind of remember to keep it between us…you know, so I can keep posting these rambling things….)

OK, quickly back to the first screenshot, you can use the “fill” here as well, to fill in columns quickly. Now, take a look next to the 4th and 5th cards down, 2005 Absolute Memorabilia # 49 Jake Plummer, and #91 Troy Brown.

See what is different about those two?

If you have those cards graded, the column where you select the cards condition, (right now all the rest are labeled “MINT”) you can choose “graded” and then enter the serial number and the grade…and (obviously) not just BGS cards!

You can enter cards from the 4 major grading companies (BGS, PSA, SGC, GAI), so this also functions as the registry…sorry, more on the registry in a later post so it can be in depth.

OK, I am about out of steam, but I am absolutely sure I skipped over SOMETHING very obvious on one of these screenshots, so PLEASE ask questions, or stay tuned…there will be more!

P.S. Suggestions on this blog’s design are more than welcome, I am slowly (but insecurely) beating this thing into shape. If you own a wordpress.com blog and understand just enough CSS to be dangerous, then you know exactly what I mean! I kind of know what I am doing, but my “eye” for design/color is…somewhat lacking.

For the first time in his life, Bryant may wish he was Greg.

This is an interesting article from Bill Berkrot, Reuters, about the lawsuit filed against HBO (and associated parties) and the Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel show. Normally I would like to write about it myself, but with the dozen or so articles I am working on, I am going to take the easy way out tonight…

By Bill Berkrot Tue Jun 24, 6:22 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) – A sports memorabilia expert filed a $5 million defamation lawsuit on Tuesday against cable television channel HBO and those associated with its “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” program for a segment that accused him of participating in a large-scale forgery ring.

Donald Frangipani, a long-time authenticator of celebrity and sports autographs and other memorabilia, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. The suit names as defendants HBO, Gumbel, on-air reporter Armen Keteylan and several of the show’s producers.

The HBO piece entitled “Forger’s Paradise” was about fake signed sports memorabilia sold to the public over the Internet and the FBI investigation called “Operation Bullpen” that in 2000 broke up a forgery ring and seized an alleged $10 million in counterfeit memorabilia.

The segment named Frangipani as the forgery ring’s authenticator of choice and alleged that Frangipani had knowingly provided fake Certificates of Authenticity for thousands of forged items. COAs are used as proof that an autograph or item being sold is genuine.

The lawsuit accuses HBO of deliberately defaming Frangipani even though he was never indicted or charged with involvement in the forgery ring.

The suit claims the HBO segment relied on accusations by Sheldon Jaffe, who had pleaded guilty to taking part in the forgery ring and who it says “is very hostile” to Frangipani.

“The HBO defendants were grossly irresponsible and acted with malice when they repeated these statements without confirming the truthfulness of them, and led the viewer to such false and defamatory conclusions,” the suit said.

It further claims that the segment was deliberately edited “to mislead viewers into believing that Frangipani approved items without really examining them.”

The HBO report included the statement: “all told Frangipani issued COAs for thousands of pieces sent to him by” the forgery ring.

The suit says Jaffe sent some authentic items to Frangipani so that legitimate COAs could be forged as well. It claims Frangipani declined 50 to 60 items of more than 400 sent by Jaffe and that Frangipani did not learn that his COAs were being forged until it was revealed by Operation Bullpen.

Frangipani is seeking a jury trial and damages of not less than $5 million plus punitive damages and the cost of the suit.

HBO, which is owned by Time Warner Inc, did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the lawsuit.

The new and improved Beckett.com

I can’t say enough about the new website, but I am going to try (and try and try and try). The designers have been testing, re-testing, adding, subtracting, tweaking…and it is looking very sharp.

Danielle Edlund gave me a personal tour of the site yesterday, showing me all of the functions. Really, we didn’t get to spend enough time, we only went through everything one time so I could see how it worked. We could have easily spent the entire day playing around with all the stuff on the site.

The new Beckett.com incorporates the best of many popular web sites and types of web sites: MySpace, iTunes, message boards, Craigslist, Wikipedia, blogging, iGoogle, My Yahoo!, Facebook–the list could go on for a couple paragraphs. The organization is superb, very user-friendly and intuitive.

When collectors realize everything that the new site can do, they will be very pleased. It will not take long for everyone to make the transition and understand how it all fits together.

That is the key to the new Beckett.com, it all fits together.

During the next few weeks, Behind the Scenes will be detailing as many of the new functions (and the improved existing ones) as possible. To be honest, I doubt we can get to it all, but no worries, I am confident that between all of us we will be covering most of it.

All of the sneak peaks dealing with the new web site will be filed under the “Top Secret” category, making it easy to find them all.

Having said all of that, I really haven’t said much, so here is the first small hint of what to expect.

If you are not already familiar with these sites, check out iGoogle or My Yahoo. On these sites, users can customize their home page however they like. To do that, users select from a variety of “gadgets,” that they want to appear on their personal page whenever they log on.

With the new Beckett.com, every registered user will get their own personal home page. Selecting from our various “blocks,” Beckett.com users will be able to customize it to show whatever “blocks” they want it to show.

For instance, anytime I log in to the new Beckett.com I am greeted by the screen you see below, but mine is slightly different because this is a screenshot of Danielle’s home page.

This is a small example, so click on the picture and it will open up in another window so you can see it much larger. Depending on your system, adjust the photo size to whatever works best for you.

Here is a super-short tour of the basics of the home page: We will be starting in the dark blue rectangular box near the top right, with the white-outlined number 1 in it, directly above the words “-Personalize this page,” and heading counter-clockwise.

There are three areas we are touching on today, Box 1 (dark blue) Box 2 (lighter blue) and Box 3 (large white area with a green 3 in it).

Now bear with me, I’ve found out that this isn’t very easy to explain, but it’s very, VERY easy to actually understand when you get down to it. (Another great thing on the new Beckett.com–there are help videos and FAQ’s galore.)

Once you register, when you log on, you come to this page (same as clicking on the above picture), it’s yours to customize.

BOX 1 & BOX 2

Clicking on the words, “-Personalize this page,” will drop down the dark blue rectangular Box 1 and the lighter blue box (Box 2) next to it.

Box 1 shows different choices of blocks you can put on your home page, depending on which category you have selected in Box 2. Clicking on any of the five categories (Learn, Discuss, Organize, Shop, Misc.) cycles through different blocks you can add to your page.

BOX 3 (green #3)

This white area is where your selected blocks appear. You can click and drag them to move them around, open or close them, delete them, whatever you want.

—————

In the example, Organize is highlighted in Box 2, and in Box 1 you see a choice of six different blocks to add to your home page, of which two are highlighted.

In Box 3 you can see two orange blocks, Organize Stats, and My Organize Stats (the highlighted blocks in Box 2). They are orange because they are blocks dealing with Organization: red blocks relate to Discuss, yellow blocks with Shop, and blue with Learn. We will get much more specific on each of these later.

You can add and remove whatever blocks you want. Once you are finished, Box 1 and Box 2 disappear. (You can bring them back at any time by clicking on “Personalize this page.”). This will leave you with the header, containing the all-important search bar (more on that later) and the white area (Box 3) containing your selected blocks.

Another user could have a completely different looking page when they log on– it all depends on what a user wants to see. It’s a great feature, and will save literally dozens of clicks a day, not to mention the time spent hunting for all that information.

There is more to come, but a quick nod to the search bar is in order–I called it “all-important” earlier, because it is everything. You can find different sports, articles, cards, sets, players, card types, things for sale, things for trade, friends (hint), recent searches, popular searches, preferred traders, various Beckett department sites…(on and on).

Everything can be found with that search bar. No hunting for information, no wondering.

Stay tuned, we’ve only just begun…

Mark your calendars – July 21, 2008

What’s happening on July 21st you ask? Well, that’s the tentative launch date for the brand, spanking new Beckett.com! Thanks to loads of new ideas and testing, we’ve had some challenging obstacles that have continued to push this date back, but we’re finally just weeks away from release! With all the build-up over the last 6 months or so, we’ve had many of you writing in with four major questions:

“When do we get to see the new site?”
July 21, 2008 (woo-hoo!)

“What’s going to happen to My Collections? Will I have to start over?”
Good news!  All of your collections will migrate over to the new site, so you won’t have to do it all over again. Even better – it’s going to be easier than ever to add cards and organize your stuff using the new collecting tools.

“Will I lose my Online Price Guide subscription?”
All Online Price Guide subscriptions will carry over to the new site. Along with that comes all of the nifty upgrades to online pricing – daily updates (which means New Release Pricing will be included), charts and graphs, and user submitted pricing.

“Are the message boards going away?”
No way! If anything, there’s going to more of them! We know how much our members love socializing on the boards, so you’ll have an opportunity at almost every click to give your opinion, write your own articles, comment on posts, and make lots of collecting friends and contacts.

So there you have it! Keep checking back for more details in the following weeks. We’ll be posting more updates about the exciting changes and additional screenshots.

The fish…

As promised, here are some photos from Friday.  We ended up with 14 trout, ranging from 5-7 lbs.  This photo does not do them justice, as the biggest ones were on the bottom (promise).  At the time this photo was taken I had my mind on other things, specifically the “monster” that we hooked, so I didn’t take the time to pull out the big fish for photos.

Fourteen trout (5t7lb.)

Now, here is a shot of the hook that got the big one we didn’t eat…

Big deal, right?  Who wants to see the hook?  Let’s see what was hooked…

OK, you asked for it, and once again, I got it…

The one we did not eat...

Ouch.  An errant cast by an unnamed (you’re welcome) member of our party, a trip to the local doctor, a tetanus shot, and I am not going to be doing a ton of typing today.

Still, those trout tasted very good…

Fantasy Friday Delay

I have been busy lately, and no, not just busy making the blog into a mess of unmatched colors with a blurry twice-saved .jpeg header (forgot to bring home the .psd file).

Anyway, poor me and all that, but I needed a break and the very generous Mr. Tracy Hackler said, “Sure.”

So, right now I am sitting on a boat a couple of miles offshore, hoping to land a big one so I can post it here Monday eat it for dinner tonight. Photoshop, HTML (well, CSS here), and the Astros’ awful June seem very far away right now.

So does the shore for that matter. Dramamine anyone?

I hate leaving things unfinished (just look at this place), so, in the interest of having less to catch up on come Monday, here is a very quick Fantasy Friday.

Hot -Pudge Rodriguez, C, Tigers

Back from the DL – Mike Gonzalez, P, Braves

Good enough for me…

Guest Blogger — Andrew from Sports Card Info.

It was the summer of 1996, and I had just really gotten into collecting. My dad and I decided to go see a Harrisburg Senators baseball game one weekend. I had never been to a minor league game before so I didn’t know what to expect.

When we got there I saw a lot of people, food stands, and stuff to buy. We went over to one of the souvenir stands and I picked up a hat, program, and team set. The team set featured a player named Vladimir Guerrero, that card actually became my first small exploration into prospecting. After we purchased our souvenirs we found our seats and began to explore the program and look at all the advertisements.

That day, the Harrisburg Senators (Montreal Expos) were playing the New Haven Ravens (Colorado Rockies). Our seats were closer to the Ravens dugout and we could watch them practice-swinging their bats. I remember before the game there was a fan with an album full of minor league team sets that he would take to games to have the players sign. After a while we got hungry and ate some hot dogs.

What happened after we were finished eating really surprised me. One of the Ravens players had broken a bat, and when they picked up the broken bat they brought it over, and swung it around the fence to me. I couldn’t believe it! They gave me a full-sized game-used bat.

It wasn’t even that broken, just a small piece of split wood off of the handle. On the bat’s barrel it says, “GENUINE MODEL C243 PRO STOCK,” and on the bottom of the bat knob there is a number 15.

I would say that that was a great way to start my collecting career, but I never found out who used the bat.

Maybe someone out there can help me find out who used it?

2007-08 NBA Champions
June 18, 2008, 12:22 am

Congratulations to the Boston Celtics, who defeated destroyed the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night to claim the 2007-08 NBA Championship.

Kudos to Paul Pierce, who I often call “The Forgotten Man,” for showing the world how great a player he is, and winning the Finals MVP award.

As a slightly eyeball-annoying-but-thankfully-not-permanent tribute, Beckett Behind the Scenes will feature this lovely background for the day…or until I get real tired of it. Being that I hold grudges and remember very, VERY clearly what happened the last time the Celtics won the title, I may get tired of it quickly.

In all seriousness though, hats off to the Celtics, they deserve it.

Who can it be?

Sure, we could ask Topps, or do some Spring Training game-jersey research, but it’s more fun to hear all the possibilities before boring reality is brought to the surface.

They are from slightly different angles and moments, but are these two photos, (allegedly) of Braves pitchers Mike Gonzalez and Jo-Jo Reyes, in fact, the exact same person?

Could be, the background seems to be the same, from the man in the dark blue shirt and hat near their left elbows, to the white “thing” (trash?) next to their right elbows. The glove is the exact same. Their sideburns are the same, so are their shoes, and their left sleeves. The shadows are very close to the same. So, if they are not the same, when did teammates ever wear different uniforms in the same game (based on the crowd/background), even in Spring Training?

What do you think?

Priceless treasures

Trying to define “collecting,” is impossible, since the concept of collecting is different to each individual.  Some try to complete sets, some collect a player (or players) they love, some collect for profit, some focus on autographs, and some collect certain teams, certain brands, years, sports…

With the exception of the “100% for profit” folks, most collectors have things they just won’t part with, no matter what.  Something that has meaning to them that is far beyond any book value or possible price tag.

To another collector, “it” (whatever it is) may seem completely worthless, a common, or a card in very poor condition.  It may be an autograph, or a jersey of a “nobody” or a “spare.”

It may be a card, a set, an autograph, a jersey, a bat or some other memorabilia…the list is endless.

The fact is, it means something to YOU, and that is all that counts.

This is what I want to focus on every Tuesday.

What is it you won’t part with?

Why does it mean so much to you, or why do you like it so much?

Send in a photograph and tell us the story behind it, and we will do our best to put one/two up every week.  It doesn’t have to be much, it can be long or short, one item or a dozen….

(Below is an example of “short and simple”…and, yes, these cards, though not the actual pictures of them, really mean something to me.)

The Nolan Ryan because it was out of my first set of cards that I actually got at an Astro game, so I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.  The Jose Cruz becaue he was the first Astro I pulled from a pack of this new-and-therefore-very-exciting-to-me card company called Donruss.

Simple enough, I hope.

Be sure to include your name and city, if you want them posted.

Fantasy Sports– pitcher to watch

Ah, Friday!  Time for the “easy” entry of the week.  The fantasy sports post, where reputations are built or, in my case for sure, slowly and very painfully demolished.

It’s not breaking news that there are team owners everywhere who are currently scrambling to replace Albert Pujols and Alfonso Soriano.  I have one team with Soriano, Zimmerman, and Tulowitzki (who was struggling anyway) all on the shelf.   Thankfully, in that league Josh Hamilton and Edinson Volquez, my 10th and 16th-round draft picks, respectively, are stepping up and making me look good.

Due to a crazy couple of weeks, and a magazine deadline today, this first entry is going to be short, one player, but this will expand in the future as we, OK….I, get a little more organized.

Fantasy player to watch -

Josh Banks, San Diego Padres – The 25-year-old righthander is very quietly having a superb start to his 2008 season.  Drafted in the second round of the 2003 first-year player draft by Toronto, he was claimed off waivers in late April by the Padres and called up from AAA Portland on May 22.

My Yahoo fantasy team, Sabermetrics, claimed him on June 4th, just in time for a nice start he had against the Mets.

Known for his excellent control and ability to throw 5 pitches, he has an eye-popping 1.04 WHIP through 23 IP this season.  He’s got a 2-0 record, one CG, and a 0.39 ERA.

Time will tell with him, he’s a fly-ball pitcher in a ballpark that was seemingly made for him, and almost all of his IP so far this season have been at PETCO.  The exceptions to that are the 9 IP against the Giants on May 31, where he got his CG, striking out five with no walks, and giving up only one (unearned) run.  (As a matter of fact, his lone earned run given up this season was driven in by David Wright, and he’s kind of known for things like that.)

Yes, the Giants are not exactly an offensive juggernaught, but anytime a pitcher gets a CG win on the road against a division rival, fantasy owners need to, at the very least, take a look.

Banks gets his third start tonight in Cleveland against the injury-plagued Indians,  who are missing…well, it seems like just about everyone.   Catcher Victor Martinez, 2B Josh Barfield, DH Travis Hafner, P Jake Westbrook, and P Fausto Carmona are all currently on the DL for the Tribe.

One of my favorite-people-who-doesn’t-know-they-are, is a big Indians fan, so, I’m sorry, Adam (if you ever happen to read this), but I am rooting for the Padres tonight.
