Some of baseball’s greats also fought for our freedom. Ty Cobb did a stint in WWI. It was the
German mustard gas from that same war that took Christy Mathewson from us.
Ted Williams and Bob Feller and many others served in WWII. Heck, one of the founding fathers of baseball, Major General Abner Doubleday, fought in the War Between the States. I’m from the South, by the way. It is not the “Civil War.” Nothing was civil about it.
War either shortened or ended baseball careers for countless players that served. What would Cecil Travis have accomplished in baseball if frost bite from the Battle of the Bulge hadn’t struck him?
Many players, from both major and minor leagues, received honors or distinctions from battle. Some made the ultimate sacrifice.
