McFarlane Toys announces rarest SportsPicks toy ever by Chris Olds

ruthrareMcFarlane Toys announced on Friday that it is set to produce the rarest SportsPicks figure ever in an upcoming baseball set.

Three copies of Babe Ruth‘s New York Yankees figure in the upcoming Cooperstown Collection series will have a dark blue cap — what we would consider close to the standard for today — instead of the standard white cap that was worn in 1920. The rare figure is seen at right.

The back of each of the three rare packages will be sealed with blue McFarlane safety tape so it will be obvious that the figures were not tampered with.

ruthrare2This will be the rarest figure produced by McFarlane as its previous rarity was a Teemu Selanne Winnipeg Jets figure from the sixth series of hockey figures. Only 13 figures were made with him wearing a No. 13 jersey — the last selling online for $8,500, according to the company.

The company also announced on Friday that more traditional chase figures — easily identifiable home or road variations — will return in the first wave of 2009 baseball. Previous subtle variations just weren’t noticable enough to pique most collectors’ interests, the company said.

Chris Olds has collected sports cards and memorabilia since 1987. Before coming to Beckett Media, he wrote about the hobby for the Orlando Sentinel on his blog, SportsStuff, and for the San Antonio Express-News and The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News. Great, something else the average working man can’t enjoy in the collectible world!
