Topps readies 2010 Topps Sterling baseball cards — with Stephen Strasburg autographed Relics by Chris Olds

Topps Sterling baseball returns for yet another season, arriving in early November with one autographed Relic or Relic limited to 10 or fewer copies along with a second Relic numbered to 25 in each and every box.

The company released the basic preview information — product checklist, images and breakdown — on Saturday.

Last year, the product introduced theme boxes, rather than player-focused assortments, and this year Topps has two new themes to be found among the various mixes — one for the first Hall of Fame Class, one for “The Five Ring Club” and one for “Rookie Phenoms.”

That last one includes a teaser … “you know who” … in the sales materials.

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is listed on three autographed Relic cards in the preliminary checklist — 0ne three-piece autograph, one four-piece autograph and one five-piece autograph — all in the Touched By Greatness set. He and Jason Heyward are the only active rookies on those higher-end card checklists.

Strasburg also can be found on the Relic and autographed Relic checklists.

Besides those two hot rookies and a small selection of active players, the product appears to be laden with Hall of Fame-caliber names from the past  — and a whole lot of memorabilia cards.

There are 20 Sterling Cut Signature Relics cards, a lineup that includes Honus Wagner, Yaz, Frank Robinson, Mike Piazza, Bo Jackson, Bobby Doerr, Stan Musial, Yogi Berra, Willie McCovey, Mariano Rivera and more.

The Sterling Pairs Cut Signatures preliminary checklist includes Roy Campanella and Thurman Munson, Ty Cobb andTris Speaker, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby, Mickey Mantle and Mel Ott, Eddie Mathews and Roger Maris as well as several other combos. That set includes 10 cards.

The autograph and Relic checklist is where things loosen up with more active players — everyone from the likes of Andre Ethier to Ulbaldo Jimenez can be found along with Hall of Famers and other memorable players from the past.
