Every Monday morning throughout the NFL season, we’ll select our rookie, veteran and breakout players of the week and provide a run down on why collectors should take notice. Here are our selections for Week 2.
By Dan Hitt
Rookie of the Week:
Jahvid Best, RB, Lions
(78 yards rushing, 154 yards receiving, 3 touchdowns)
Best is off to an incredible start to his rookie campaign with five touchdowns in just his first two games. He logged a remarkable 232 yards from scrimmage on Sunday despite the Lions falling to 0-2. Expect to see plenty of Jahvid Best in the coming weeks on the field which means plenty of hobby attention to follow. In fact, Best’s cards have already been moving based on his week one performance so they are bound to ride that momentum further upward. He’s still selling for a level or two lower than other rookie backs C.J. Spiller and Ryan Mathews but that gap in value may not last long.
Cards to Grab:
2010 Donruss Elite Turn of the Century Autos/249 #110 ($50)
2010 Rookies and Stars #277 AU/299 RC ($50)
2010 Topps #268B SP catching pose ($25)
Breakout Player of the Week:
Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers
(82 yards rushing, 5.1 average, 2 touchdowns)
With former Charger great LT off to New York, high flying rookie replacement Ryan Mathews out with an ankle injury, and starting fullback Jacob Hester not playing due to injury, little known backup fullback Mike Tolbert steps in and scores a pair of touches to help the Chargers avoid 0-2 for their first win. Who would have thought? Tolbert’s in his third season and scored twice as many rushing touchdowns on Sunday as he has had in his career.
Let’s not get too excited about Tolbert since he’s bound to take a seat when Mathews and Hester return but it’s good to know the Chargers can produce on the ground with anyone on their roster. If you have a hunch Tolbert could be a long term player, he has just three Rookie Cards from 2008 and just one autograph: 2008 Playoff Contenders.
Cards to Grab:
2008 Playoff Contenders AU/199* RC #215 ($40)
2008 SP Authentic #109 RC/1399 ($8)
2008 Ultimate Collection #134 RC/275 ($8)
Veteran of the Week:
Jay Cutler, QB, Bears
(277 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, 136.7 QB rating)
Is that really the Bears who are off to a 2-0 start? It is thanks in large part to Jay Cutler’s nearly perfect play in Dallas on Sunday. Cutler is undefeated as a starter when he logs a QB rating of more than 100. He easily surpassed that level by cutting the Cowboys defense apart with a series of smart reads and quick decisions in the face of blitzes and heavy rushes. If Cutler can play at this level with some consistency, the Bears have a chance to challenge in the NFC North and collectors are bound to renew interest in Cutler’s top cardboard. His best 2006 Rookie Cards have been rather cold of late and were not difficult to find at LO column prices. It may be tougher to get those types of bargains this week, but it should take more than a pair of great games to get all of Cutler’s cards moving again. Stay tuned.
