Every Monday morning throughout the NFL season, we’ll select our rookie, veteran and breakout players of the week and provide a rundown on why collectors should take notice. Here are our selections for Week 4.

Rookie of the Week:
Sam Bradford, QB, Rams
(289 yards passing, 2 touchdowns)

Incredibly, Sam Bradford has the St. Louis Rams at 2-2 on the season surpassing the team’s win total for all of last year! Bradford appears to be a quarterback capable of continuing the recent trend of first year success at the QB position. In the past, rookie quarterbacks seldom had much success in the NFL, but that seemed to change with Ben Roethlisberger in 2004 and each successive year we’ve seen one or more first year signal callers make good. Most of those players turned into solid veterans as well and their hobby status remained strong. Bradford’s cards may already be selling at or near their tops, but the future for the quarterback looks great so the hobby downside may be minimal.

Cards to Grab:
2010 Finest Rookie Patch Autographs #125 ($N/A)
2010 Prestige Pro Helmets Autographs #SB ($150)
2010 Topps #300B SP taking snap ($50)

Breakout Player of the Week:
Mike Tolbert, RB, Chargers
(100 yards rushing, 6.2 average, 1 touchdown)

The Chargers really found something in Mike Tolbert who continues to carry the load while Ryan Mathews makes his way back from injury. Mathews was expected by many to be the featured back, but with the success Tolbert is having we may see less from Mathews than anticipated. Collectors have yet to jump on Tolbert cards (he has just five total) and may not be likely to since Mathews is the future. However, with so few cards available Tolbert may be an interesting player to watch on the secondary market.

Cards to Grab:
2008 Playoff Contenders AU/199* RC #215 ($40)
2008 SP Authentic #109 RC/1399 ($8)
2008 Ultimate Collection #134 RC/275 ($8)

Veteran of the Week:
Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers
(241 yards passing, 2 touchdowns, 148.1 QB rating)

Philip Rivers simply dismantled the Cardinals defense on Sunday – something he’s been doing on a regular basis for several years now. The only thing not on Rivers’ hobby resume is a Super Bowl win which may be required for his best 2004 cards to catch fire. On the other hand, additional convincing victories such as this could attract a few more buyers in anticipation of the post season since the Chargers appear to be an early front runner and Rivers top cards are still priced lower than fellow 2004 rookie quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning.

Cards to Grab:
2004 Bowman Chrome #223 AU/199 RC ($150)
2004 Playoff Contenders #162 AU/556* RC ($150)
2004 SP Authentic #214 JSY AU/299 RC ($400)
