Father and son win trip to 2011 NHL Winter Classic from Upper Deck by Susan Lulgjuraj

In just 24 hours after Upper Deck announced the “Collect the Set & Win” hockey contest, the company already found a winner.

That didn’t take long at all.

As soon as Jim and AJ Ramsay heard about the promotion, they set out to win the top prize of a trip to the 2011 NHL Winter Classic in Pittsburgh.

The father and son duo were set up at the 2010 Fall Expo in Toronto, Canada when a customer told them about the contest. All they had to do was complete the 2010-11 Upper Deck Series 1 20th Anniversary 250-card insert set, which was released Wednesday.

Just because the Ramsays completed the set this quickly doesn’t mean it was an easy task. The inserts fall at a rate of just six per box.

But the two scoured the cards they had, which was slightly time consuming, but not unmanageable. They had purchased 20 cases of the Upper Deck product.

“The last four cards we needed were all ‘Young Guns,’ so this morning we went out to all the dealers at the show to try and track down the last four,” said AJ Ramsay, who lives with his father in Winnipeg, Manitoba. “When I got the last four cards, I was so relieved, but we just didn’t know if someone else had beaten us to the punch. We were so happy that Upper Deck was in attendance at the show so we could check.”

Upper Deck included the variation to mark its 20th anniversary of NHL cards. The 20th Anniversary insert set features the 1990-1991 design along with photography reminiscent of the original cards.

The 2011 NHL Classic will showcase two of the sport’s most prolific stars with Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby facing Alex Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals on New Year’s Day.

“It’s exciting for us, but I’m really excited for my son,” said Jim Ramsay. “He loves the Pittsburgh Penguins so to see them live is going to be a real thrill for him. I think it’s really nice to see a company offer its collectors this type of reward for completing such an impressive collection.”

The hunt doesn’t end here for collectors. There are still four prizes available for anyone who completes the 20th Anniversary insert set. The second and third collectors to complete it will win a 2010 NHLPA Rookie Showcase multi-signed helmet.

The fourth person wins a Taylor Hall-signed UDA Reebok stick and the fifth will win a Tyler Seguin-signed 2010 NHLPA autographed puck from UDA.

Collectors interested in participating in Upper Deck’s “Collect the Set & Win” have to email Upper Deck at UpperDeckMarketing@upperdeck.com when they are within 20 cards of completing the set. Upper Deck will stay in contact with those collectors and provide directions on where to send their sets upon completion for verification purposes. Once verified, Upper Deck will begin announcing the remaining prizewinners. Upper Deck will hold sets until all five prizes have been claimed.
