College coaches share spotlight in new Upper Deck set by Chris Olds

By Chris Olds | Editor

In the college ranks, there’s typically one man who stands above the rest.

The head coach.

While countless coaching legends have appeared on cards through the years, it’s in Collegiate Licensing Company-approved and draft pick products where the legends are often found. The likes of Bobby Knight, John Wooden, Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne and many more have made their way into packs.

But there are still more to be found — and that’s where the latest effort from Upper Deck comes in.

Upper Deck scraps 2010 Ultimate Collection Football; ups ante in 2010-11 SP Authentic Basketball by Chris Olds

By Chris Olds | Editor

Upper Deck released a pair of statements to distributors about two forthcoming products on Monday, with one product getting the red light and the other one getting a green light for some higher-end autograph additions.

First, the company has decided to scrap its plans for a 2010 Ultimate Collection Football set, which would have been a college release under its exclusive deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company. The company cited the present state of the industry, which is crowded with many slow-moving, perhaps overproduced products at this time.

Blake Griffin’s long-awaited NBA debut starts off right by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

More than a year after Blake Griffin was the 2009 top overall draft pick by the Los Angeles Clippers, he finally made his NBA debut.

The Oklahoma graduate, who spent last year shelved after knee surgery, had 20 points and 14 rebounds (nine offensive) in Wednesday night’s 98-88 loss to the Portland Trailblazers.

Griffin’s play gave Clippers fans something to finally cheer about.

The game didn’t start easily for Griffin. He took two fouls early in the first quarter and needed a break. But Griffin, who finished with four fouls, also didn’t play with a man worried about making contact. He was aggressive and visibly disappointed with himself when he missed a shot or made a mistake.

Yes, that’s Magic Johnson’s autograph on Jordan Swagerty’s baseball cards by Chris Olds

By Chris Olds | Editor

Mistakes happen.

That’s the easiest way to sum up the unusual error card found in boxes of 2010 Donruss Elite Extra Edition Baseball, which arrived recently with a few unusual autograph cards of former Arizona State standout and St. Louis Cardinals prospect Jordan Swagerty.

The error?

All of the autographs on his cards are of a guy named Earvin Johnson. You know, the Hall of Fame basketball player otherwise  known as “Magic.”

Panini America officials were aware of the mistake not long after collectors began ripping into packs of the prospecting product. The company is reportedly discussing plans to replace the error cards, which might be plentiful, with rarer corrected versions — but has not yet announced its plan.

Update: Panini will replace the incorrect Swagerty autographed standard card with a correct version and collectors who send in the correct card an exclusive Elite Extra Edition card of top-prospect Manny Machado.
