Upper Deck Produces Thierry Henry’s First MLS Trading Card by Tracy Hackler

Upper Deck officials have produced the first Major League Soccer trading card of French superstar Thierry Henry and are distributing it free to those collectors who purchase two blaster boxes of 2010 Upper Deck Soccer at the company’s online store.

Henry, a headline-generating talent of international proportions, is the all-time leading scorer for Arsenal of the English Premier League and a member of France’s 1998 World Cup championship squad. He signed with the MLS’ Red Bulls less than five weeks ago and promptly scored a goal in his first game, on July 22.

The Upper Deck card features an image from that historic tally.

“There are few names associated with soccer right now that are bigger than Henry’s,” said Jason Masherah, Upper Deck’s Vice President of Marketing. “Since we were unable to include him in our original Upper Deck Soccer product this year, for the simply fact that he was not yet a member of the [MLS], this is a big coup for us. We’re extremely excited to get this card out into the marketplace.”

Famous Fabrics Second Edition Impresses — Without a License by Tracy Hackler

What In The Game patriarch Dr. Brian Price lacks in big-time league licensing, he more than makes up for by continuing to push the creative envelope when it comes to high-end multisport, multi-generational products.

For the latest case in point, look no further than Famous Fabrics Second Edition, a simply majestic memorabilia-card marvel from Price’s Creative Cardboard Concepts label due to drop next week at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore.

Devoid of player photography and the always-welcomed stamp of approval that player and league licensing affords, the product manages to sparkle anyway thanks to the historic nature of its content and the innovative high points of its development.

The checklist alone is arguably the most comprehensive ever assembled in terms of sports and eras touched. No less than 20 sports or disciplines are represented (the big four plus mixed martial arts, golf, boxing, soccer, horse racing, poker, professional wrestling, auto racing, bicycling, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, swimming, ice skating, coaching, announcing and even dare-deviling). The fact that Price and his people even managed to acquire memorabilia for such a far-reaching roster is a commendable feat in and of itself.

Panini’s World Cup Soccer Stickers Make a Lasting Impression by Tracy Hackler

There was a time – like February – when I could’ve crammed everything I knew about soccer on the back of one of those little officially licensed Panini World Cup stickers. (And there would’ve been plenty of room left to also jot down . . . oh, I don’t know . . . perhaps the complete history of the Brazilian national team.)

So imagine my surprise-treading-on-euphoria last week when I discovered my face on the front of one of those little officially licensed Panini World Cup stickers. Actually, my face was on 15 of them, tucked magnificently inside an altered Panini World Cup sticker album.

There were 12 affixed to a sheet, one already placed on the first page of the album, one inserted into the pack of stickers on the front of the album and one secured safely in an inch-thick brick of Lucite. And this was my reaction: “. . .”

Indeed, I was speechless. I mean, come on – how would you react to unexpectedly seeing your very own collectible sticker for the first time? I must have gazed longingly at that sheet of me for 20 solid minutes – like Narcissus at his own image in the reflecting pool – until I came to one stark realization: I need a haircut. More sticker albums wouldn’t hurt, either.
