Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain fuel $1.48M Grey Flannel’s Basketball Hall of Fame auction by Chris Olds

Grey Flannel‘s Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Auction netted $1.48 million recently — an average lot price of more than $6,600 — with some classic items helping lead the way.

The annual auction, which was held at the Hall of Fame, is in its fifth year and was topped by a 1968-69 Boston Celtics home warm-up jacket worn by Bill Russell and and a 1965-66 Wilt Chamberlain Philadelphia 76ers game-used home jersey. Each drew $84,000.

A collection of items from Hall of Famer Dennis Johnson was sold, including his 1984 Boston Celtics World Championship player’s ring, which went for $78,000. His 1980 Western Conference game-used All-Star uniform went for $24,000.

At The National: As Cool as Iceman by Chris Olds

A limited edition McFarlane Toys figure of San Antonio Spurs icon George “Iceman” Gervin was for sale at this year’s National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore.

It could be the first of a few charitable memorabilia projects coming from Babaie Promotions Inc. and Chris Olds caught up with its president, Alix Babaie to get all the details.



First look: 2009-10 Panini Hall of Fame basketball cards (updated) by Chris Olds

Panini America officials unveiled on Thursday a new addition to its basketball lineup, 2009-10 Hall of Fame Basketball, which looks to be a high-end ode to the greats of the game with offerings perhaps not seen in some time for the basketball collector.

Each $100 box will include two autographs, one memorabilia card one Black Border base card and seven other cards.

Among the notable inclusions are Famed Signatures (on-card Autographs of Hall of Famers), Hall of Fame Monikers (signed with nickname) and Dream Team Game Threads cards, which include regular and prime swatches from game-used 1992 U.S. Men’s Olympic jerseys.

Hall of Fame arrives on July 28. See more after the jump.

Panini America signs exclusive deal with Basketball Hall of Fame by Chris Olds

This just in Tuesday evening…

ARLINGTON, Texas – Panini America Inc. is thrilled to announce an exclusive, multi-year marketing and licensing agreement with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Panini is already the exclusive trading-card licensee for the NBA and this new relationship with the Hall of Fame expands its global basketball presence.

“We’re excited to have the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame join the Panini family,” Panini America CEO Michael Eisenstein said. “This partnership is yet another building block within Panini’s strategy to encompass all aspects of basketball. It’s an honor to have this opportunity.”

The timing of this partnership coincides with the historic induction of the 50th anniversary Hall of Fame Class of 2009, featuring Michael Jordan, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan, John Stockton and C. Vivian Stringer. Panini representatives will attend this weekend’s events in Springfield, Mass., including Friday’s press conference.
