Rajon Rondo steps out of the cardboard shadows by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor | Commentary

Rajon Rondo isn’t the biggest star on his team.

The Boston Celtics point guard lets the attention fall on those around him while he dishes out the ball to get the rest of his team the numbers that make people look.

Rondo is an assist machine. He averages 13.4 assists a game and had a 23-assist game on Jan. 5, but that wasn’t even his best game this season. He had a 24-assist game on Oct.29 against the New York Knicks.

With all those players around him such as Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and even Shaquille O’Neal, is Rondo overshadowed in the collecting world?

2010-11 Donruss Basketball … Lots of pretty pictures by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

I was feeling a bit nostalgic today after looking at the 2010-11 Donruss Basketball card gallery.

These cards just feel oldschool. They feel like something I would have collected when I was just an itty, bitty kid – and that isn’t a bad thing.

Panini America released a massive preview on the product that releases on Jan. 5. There are a number of elements from with jersey cards, autographs, die-cards and flashy Holokote parallels.

Each box yields 24 packs with 10 (!) cards per pack. There are three autograph or memorabilia cards, and more than 20 die-cut cards per box.

The DUOS short-prints are available one in every other box.

What do you think of this product so far?

‘King James’ debuts with Miami Heat tonight by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

The NBA season starts tonight with one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it doesn’t include the current champions.

The Miami Heat travel to the Boston Celtics at 7:30 p.m., which will air on TNT.

Even the most casual of NBA fans want to get a look at LeBron James in his first regular-season game with the Heat. Plenty of hype surrounded Miami in the off-season, which began with a few simple words this summer.

“I’m taking my talent to South Beach,” James said in an hour-long show on ESPN in July.

He signed with Miami, which already had Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.

Grey Flannel‘s Basketball Hall of Fame Induction Auction netted $1.48 million recently — an average lot price of more than $6,600 — with some classic items helping lead the way.

The annual auction, which was held at the Hall of Fame, is in its fifth year and was topped by a 1968-69 Boston Celtics home warm-up jacket worn by Bill Russell and and a 1965-66 Wilt Chamberlain Philadelphia 76ers game-used home jersey. Each drew $84,000.

A collection of items from Hall of Famer Dennis Johnson was sold, including his 1984 Boston Celtics World Championship player’s ring, which went for $78,000. His 1980 Western Conference game-used All-Star uniform went for $24,000.

Kobe Bryant, Rajon Rondo Primed to Soar in NBA Finals by Tracy Hackler

One of the greatest rivalries in sports resumes tonight when the Lakers battle Boston in Game 1 of the 2010 NBA Finals.

A fifth ring for Lakers legend Kobe Bryant will most certainly send his already-ascending top cards to even higher heights. A second one for Celtics scorching superstar Rajon Rondo will do the same for his best issues.

(Of course, a fifth ring for Kobe also will bring him within one of matching Michael Jordan, the hobby king himself, in that category. Oh, and it would give him exactly five more rings than LeBron James has.)

I took some time this afternoon to pick the brain of Beckett’s Senior NBA Market Analyst Keith Hower (OK, it was a short conversation) about trends to watch as the Finals begin.

Here are some of his highlights . . .
