Robert Horry finally has an NBA certified autograph by Chris Olds

Robert Horry played 16 seasons and won seven NBA championships but there was one thing he never did.

He never signed a certified autograph card showing him in a pro uniform.

Until now.

Panini America‘s new 2009-10 Season Update basketball set includes the first certified autograph card of Horry as a pro, his only second certified autograph ever as only Star Pics landed Horry on a University of Alabama draft picks card way back in 1992.

Horry has three cards in the set — cards limited to just 25, 50 and 99 copies apiece — and the first copy of the easiest card to find card that sold online went for $75. That card shows him in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform.

The latest one to hit the auction block? It’s topped $100, though one can expect that those totals will come down as more cards are found.

John Wooden leaves an immense legacy by Chris Olds

John Wooden‘s basketball legacy speaks volumes. His victories, his championships, his proteges who share a place with him in the Hall of Fame where he was inducted twice — as a player and as a coach — pale in comparison to the other ways he found success in life.

He was one of the world’s greatest coaches — if not the best — but that’s not how he saw himself.

“What am I?” he once asked. “Just a teacher — a member of one of the great professions in the world.”

The former UCLA Bruins coach died Friday evening at age 99. However, for all of his successes on the court — among them 10 NCAA championships including seven in a row from 1967 to 1973 as well as a record 88 consecutive victories — it was the life lessons that he instilled in players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and Sidney Wicks that many say makes his legacy much, much greater.

For years after he retired, “The Wizard of Westwood” was a fixture at UCLA games. And for years he was as mighty with his pen as he was with his “Pyramid of Success,” which was included on a signed fold-out business card of his (above) with every through-the-mail autograph request he received. (Click on the image at right to read his advice on life.)

Wooden signed regularly through the mail for collectors and fans until his health and heavy volumes of requests forced him to curb the practice.

Dick Vitale set to star in debut of first talking Fathead by Chris Olds

Just when you thought you had heard it all from Dick Vitale, Fathead unleashes this.

The Livonia, Mich.-based company is set to unveil the world’s first talking vinyl wall graphics — and the mile-a-minute “Prime-Time Talker” from ESPN is the first subject.

Fathead is debuting new technology with the piece, which enables the image to “talk” with the use of a special pen. Vitale’s arsenal of phrases, like “It’s Awesome Baby,” “Diaper Dandy,” “PTP’er” and “Dipsy-doo, Dunk-a-roo” will be heard on his Fathead Jr., which will be arriving soon.

“We could not have chosen a better ambassador of collegiate basketball than Dickie V to launch and lead off our talking Fathead Line,” said Fathead CEO Patrick McInnis in a release. “We are honored and excited to be working with him again to provide these unique experiences and opportunities to both of our loyal and passionate fans.”

Fathead also is launching its “You’re A Winner Baby” Sweepstakes at Fathead.com, where fans can try to win Vitale-signed memorabilia, Fathead products and other prizes during March Madness.

Arizona’s Lute Olson retires — now’s the time to track down that key memorabilia by Chris Olds

Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson is retiring, which means there will probably be a bit more interest in Olson’s memorabilia in the short term.

The 74-year-old coach’s place in basketball history is secure. After all, he’s coached more than 20 seasons with the Wildcats — and has nearly 600 victories, four Final Four appearances and one NCAA championship.

So, what are his key trading cards?

Elite Extra Edition Dean Smith autographs are now live by Chris Olds

Dean Smith‘s 2007 Elite Extra Edition Collegiate Patches autograph cards have been signed and are on the way to collectors.

“Smith battled some health issues late last year and it took him a little longer than he expected to finish all the signatures,” Donruss Marketing/PR Director Scott Prusha said. “He wanted to fulfill those redemptions for collectors and worked hard to get them done — we appreciate all those that have hung in there while we worked hard to complete the signing.”

The Hall of Famer won 879 games as a coach, which ranks second all time, and won a pair of national championships coaching North Carolina.
