First Look: 2010 Century Collection trading cards by Chris Olds

By Chris Olds | Editor

It’s back.

Panini America unveiled the basic product information and images for 2010 Panini Century Collection, a multi-sport and non-sport product laden with memorabilia swatches, autographs and postage stamps of some of the world’s biggest names.

It’s a product that had been announced in January 2009 by Donruss but was shelved in the wake of the company’s legal issues with Major League Baseball and its eventual sale to the Italian collectibles giant.

The high-end offering will include five cards in every pack — at $200 a pack — with two autographs, two memorabilia cards and one additional autograph or memorabilia card when it arrives on Dec. 22.

Each 15-box case will include at least three of the following items: cuts or stamp cut cards, astronaut autographs, memorabilia cards of Joe Jackson or Jim Thorpe and autographs from Pete Rose, Cal Ripken Jr., Nolan Ryan, George Brett or Stan Musial.

Panini America officials revealed to Beckett Media on Friday a few of the surprises it has in store for the upcoming 2010 Donruss Elite Extra Edition baseball card set that arrives in late-September.

Perhaps the biggest surprise? A Pamela Anderson autographed baseball card.

You see, the 43-year-old former Playboy model and Baywatch star is a big fan of the Pepperdine University baseball team, so much so she’ll appear on card No. 100 in the set wearing a Pepperdine Wave jersey.

Oh, and she’ll be signing 35 cards — on-card, not stickers — for inclusion in packs.

Among the retired players and Hall of Famers signing for the set in their high school or college uniforms are Cal Ripken Jr., Randy Johnson, Reggie Jackson, Paul Molitor, Alan Trammell, Tom Seaver and Bob Gibson among others.

Among the 33 prospects who have signed on-card for DEEE are:

Artist Kevin John produces sketch cards for Pop Century set by Chris Olds

Phoenix-based sports artist Kevin John created 800 full-color sketch cards for the newly released Razor Pop Century set, which makes its debut this week at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Baltimore.

The line, now part of the Leaf Trading Cards label, includes three autographed cards and three memorabilia cards per box.

Among the sketches done by John are William Shatner, Henry Winkler, Stan Lee, Kim Kardashian, Davy Jones, Bo Derek and others.

“This really takes my work in an entirely new direction,” said the artist. “It allows the average collector to obtain original artwork that is usually reserved for my celebrity and athlete clients. Razor is an industry leader in collectible card products, and it’s an honor to be chosen as their solo artist for this series.”
