First Look: 2010-11 Certified Hockey by Tracy Hackler

With a long-untapped arsenal of fan-favorite brands to pull from, the subject of what product should lead became a hot-button topic inside Panini America’s walls the second the company announced in late March that it was entering the hockey card business.

Traditional wisdom swayed things early toward the venerable Score brand. Ultimately, though, the power of a positive first impression won out.

“We went into this with our own ideas of what the first launch would be and what brand we wanted to reintroduce to the market first,” says Scott Prusha, Panini America’s Director of Marketing. “But we listened intently to distributors and other key partners within the hobby and the message was clear: ‘Come out with a bang. Come out hitting. Come out really making a bold statement.’

“That’s why we settled on Certified.”

In late September, Panini America makes its long-awaited debut in the NHL trading card market by delivering 2010-11 Certified Hockey, the first Certified brand since 1997-98.

They are sometimes linemates but always teammates and now the two young men had a chance to hoist Lord Stanley in Philadelphia.

Then they basked in a parade in Chicago and if you thought you’ve seen a lot of combination cards of Patrick Kane and captain Jonathan Toews then think again – – expect a plethora of them in the coming sets by Upper Deck and hockey newcomer Panini.

Recently UD Artifacts had a nice combo card of this dynamic duo on a patch card numbered to just 15. Before the Cup, that card probably would have sold for $100 to $150 but now a card like this has an asking price of $200.

Is it worth it?

I think so especially if you are a fan of either the players or the teams.

Saturday is National Hockey Card Day in Canada by Chris Olds

Saturday might be normally reserved for “Hockey Night in Canada” but this week Saturday also marks National Hockey Card Day for Canadian fans.

As part of its celebration, Upper Deck is giving away thousands of NHCD card packs free to collectors at Canadian hobby shops and selected retail stores as part of the second-annual celebration of Canada’s unofficial national pastime.

“Hockey is the national sport in Canada so Upper Deck wanted to come up with a way to celebrate that incredible devotion,” said Chris Carlin, Upper Deck’s sports marketing manager. “We started this program last year and it was a huge success with countless hockey fans and trading card collectors visiting hobby shops and retailers across Canada. We expect the same kind of excitement this time around.”

See a video about NHCD along with a checklist and details about how Canadians can get these cards after the jump.

Four Chicago Blackhawks lead way on ESPN’s NHL preview by Chris Olds

ESPNmag

Autograph collectors should have a good time with this one.

The latest issue of ESPN The Magazine, its NHL preview issue, has a cover with Chicago Blackhawks Marian Hossa, Cristobal Huet, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

While The Mag may not be as collected as, say, Sports Illustrated — its size a partial reason why — covers like this striking one will certainly have a place in the hobby.

Just like the Blackhawks.
