When you think of George Gervin, the first thing that usually comes to mind is that sweet finger roll he made famous.

The Iceman and the finger roll have been synonymous with each other since Gervin started playing basketball.

McFarlane Toys has immortalized that pose – ABA style.

Fans can’t get the special figurine that depicts Gervin in a San Antonio Spurs ABA uniform just anywhere. It’s not available at McFarlane’s website or in stores.

The only place to pick up this exclusive statue is through Babaie Promotions Inc., (www.bpifanconnect.com). Part of the proceeds will go to the George Gervin Youth Center, a K-12 charter school in San Antonio that offers a number of services for students and their families.

Guest commentary: Saluting a legend in Mike Modano by Chris Olds

By Russ Cohen

Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano looks like he is about to hang up his skates.

I know that he has a lot of fans in Dallas, Minnesota and around the NHL. He’s won a Stanley Cup, he’s been a six-time All-Star, and a solid NHL citizen for 20 years.

A lot of collectors like him because he’s one of the greatest American players of all-time as well. He’s played in 1,459 games, he has 557 goals and he has 92 game-winning goals which is more than Wayne Gretzky.

This soon-to-be 40 year old will leave an indelible mark in the hobby as being one of the most popular players of his era and for appearing on a boatload of cards as well.

He was the first overall pick in the 1988 draft, and he has been everything fans thought he would be.

Here are some key collectibles of his to look for:

McFarlane Toys Reveals First Signed Hockey Figures by Tracy Hackler

By Russ Cohen

In NHL news, McFarlane Toys made a pretty big splash at Toy Fair over the weekend by following up last September’s announcement of autographed chase figures with a sneak preview of the first signed hockey figures.

I got a sneak peek of a Gordie Howe-signed base that had his formal name of “Gordon” with the “#9;” interesting to note that he didn’t sign “Mr. Hockey.” Figures all have a small white box on the side of the base and a limited amount of them will be autographed and randomly inserted into case packs. That figure is out now.

New York Islanders rookie John Tavares will be in the NHL 24 release along with Mike Cammalleri (Habs) and Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson (Leafs). Tavares will have autographs in the set and I suspect they will be an extremely hot commodity. There will be just 200 to 400 pieces total that have sequentially numbered autographs and the price point is still $9.99.

There is no way for the company to protect against “figure searching” so I suspect sometime in April when this hits the market, the sharks will be waiting.
