Panini America unveils wrapper redemption program for NHL All-Star weekend by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

Raleigh, N.C., will be the place to be this weekend for hockey fans and hockey card collectors.

Upper Deck released its plans of the 2011 NHL All-Star Fan Fair and now Panini America’s plans are out for all to see.

One of the biggest ways card company’s give away items at these types of events is through wrapper redemption programs. It gets the customer to buy product in order to receive exclusive cards.

Panini’s redemption program highlights 1990-91 Score Hockey.

For every three packs of 2010-11 Panini NHL hobby packs a customer opens at the Panini booth, they will receive a two-card pack.

The set commemorating Score Hockey will have seven cards limited to 500 copies, but there are opportunities to get some great hits in each pack. Along with special inserts, collectors have the chance to find Rookie NHL patch autographs and other autos from players such as Sidney Crosby, Taylor Hall and Steve Yzerman.

Checking out 2010-2011 Upper Deck’s NHL Ultimate by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

With the NHL All-Star Game in less than a week, it’s never a bad time to look at hockey cards.

2010-2011 NHL Ultimate is gearing up to be a very impressive product on Upper Deck’s calendar, which is currently scheduled for mid-April.

We know how Ultimate works. You get one pack per box, and the hits can be worthwhile. Collectors can snag rare cards of players such as Alex Ovechkin, Mark Messier or Taylor Hall.

There are just four cards in a pack, but collectors get one autograph, one memorabilia and one rookie card in each pack. A 15-box case will yield one autographed-memorabilia card, three to four patch cards and three “A” Level autos on average.

Many of the best past and present players are included.

The NHL shield patch cards already seem to be favorite for some collectors.

Look for more pictures after the jump.

Upper Deck releases 2009-10 NHL Be-A-Player rookie card exchange checklist by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

Hockey rules are slightly different when it comes to Rookie Cards, although they’re still simple.

Once you skate, you get a card.

This hampers companies slightly, but there are ways to work around it. Upper Deck created a rookie card exchange program with 2009-10 Be-A-Player, which allowed it to release the product, but also add value by having leverage to create cards for players who have to skate.

Upper Deck released the final checklist from the 60-card rookie exchange subset. It’s a solid checklist, which includes players such as Edmonton’s Taylor Hall and Boston’s Tylor Seguin.

All cards are numbered to /99. Upper Deck stated it has just started to create the cards and will take about three months to complete. They expect to be finished around February.

See the checklist after the jump.

Justin Bieber can’t play hockey, so he did the next best thing to get on a card by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

Justin Bieber dreamed of being a hockey player with his own trading card when he grew up.

While the pop sensation didn’t fulfill his first dream, the Canadian singer is living out his second at 16 years old.

Panini America released the official Justin Bieber trading card set – just in time for Christmas for his millions of fans worldwide. The collection features 150 unique trading cards with 30 stickers. Inserts in the set include 12 Spellbound cards, nine puzzle pieces that form a poster, 18 Download cards and 10 XXOO cards.

The Bieber set will also have 500 autograph cards randomly inserted. Even if you aren’t a Bieber fan (and quite possibly are not if you are part of our typical audience here), these autographs could sell for a decent amount of money on eBay. Maybe enough to get a baseball or football card you’ve been eying as a self-Christmas present.

NHL loses former coach Pat Burns by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

Former NHL coach Pat Burns died on cancer on Friday. He was 58.

Burns led the New Jersey Devils to the 2003 Stanley Cup Championship and later battled cancer in 2004 and 2005. However, in 2009 doctors learned the disease had spread to his lungs.

“Just as they will remember Pat for his success as a coach, hockey fans also will remember his humor, his honesty, his humanity and his courage,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “As it mourns the loss of an outstanding contributor to the game, the National Hockey League sends heartfelt condolences to Pat’s family and friends.”

For regular collectors, getting a tin of 2009-2010 Upper Deck’s The Cup might give you a thrilling rush to open. Each box, which contains one pack, costs about $400.

For a man making a little more than $9 million a year, that surge is a little tempered.

Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin ripped a pack of Upper Deck’s 2009-2010 The Cup (Ovechkin signed a 13-year $124 million contract extension in 2008) at a private party recently and there’s video proof.

He also ripped a $100 box of 2009-2010 Ultimate Hockey.

See the autographs and patches he gets.

Spoiler: He didn’t get any of his own cards.

Father and son win trip to 2011 NHL Winter Classic from Upper Deck by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

In just 24 hours after Upper Deck announced the “Collect the Set & Win” hockey contest, the company already found a winner.

That didn’t take long at all.

As soon as Jim and AJ Ramsay heard about the promotion, they set out to win the top prize of a trip to the 2011 NHL Winter Classic in Pittsburgh.

The father and son duo were set up at the 2010 Fall Expo in Toronto, Canada when a customer told them about the contest. All they had to do was complete the 2010-11 Upper Deck Series 1 20th Anniversary 250-card insert set, which was released Wednesday.

Lower the Drawbridge: Crown Royale Hockey is Coming by tolentinotown

By Andrew Tolentino | Assistant Editor

After Jan. 5, you might want to double check your wet bar. If you find a fancy bottle inside a purple, velvet bag, you probably have an adult beverage, suitable for sipping or mixing. If you discover a box decorated with regal imagery and masters of the puck, put down that dusty cocktail glass and seal up that ice bucket. You’re holding the equally intoxicating Panini Crown Royale Hockey. They’re both Canadian delights, but only the Panini America product offers a high-end lineup of autographs and memorabilia that’s fit for a collecting king. Continue reading
