Rippin’ Retail: Panini Longevity Rookies & Stars vs. three Basketball Blasters by Chris Olds

By Chris Olds | Editor | Commentary

Collectors often bemoan he differences between hobby and retail boxes, opting for the superior hobby version over the taste-test of a retail blaster or other type of offering.

In some cases, though, that logic just might be unfounded — good cards certainly can be found in retail, but if they’re not there the prices might be better depending on how in-demand boxes might be.

It really just depends on what you’re buying. However, not all retail boxes are made alike, either.

I recently ripped some retail Panini America basketball boxes and was kind of surprised by what I found. Frankly, the cheapest of all retail versions — the Blaster box — seemed to compete well with its bigger-time counterpart, the Longevity version of 2010-11 Rookies & Stars. The $50 Longevity box was a dud, while three Blasters (two Rookies & Stars boxes and one Threads box) seemed more interesting for approximately the same price at $60.

How is that? It surprised me. At first glance, the retail-focused Longevity found only in Target stores seems like a good alternative to the typical Blaster boxes. After all, it looks more like a hobby box so it should feel more like a hobby box, right? It’s packing three autograph or memorabilia cards per 10-pack box and is otherwise an abbreviated offering of the standard Rookies & Stars set but printed on foilboard. (In the case of this design, I actually don’t mind the foilboard — a rare instance.)

Panini unveiled one of its first sets for the forthcoming basketball season on Tuesday with 2010-11 Threads set to arrive on Nov. 24 packing more than 20,000 on-card autographs in the product.

Each 24-pack hobby box will include two autographs and two memorabilia cards with one of those being a Threads Rookie signature limited to just 399 copies.

The five-card packs will cost $4 apiece and there will be 12 boxes per case.

Each box also will include 13 insert cards, among them a pair of new sets — All-time Big Men and the Rookie Team Threads Home and Away inserts. Last year, the diecut jersey cards brought some distinctly different looks to the basketball card arena and this year it’s all about the rookies. The signed versions of these cards will be limited to just 99 copies for each version.

Also new this year will be Threads Rookies, which carry a hardwood aesthetic, while there are also hobby-exclusive Platinum Century Proof parallels that will be limited to just 25.

Card gallery: Panini America’s Threads and Limited basketball inserts by Chris Olds

Panini America released images on Tuesday for a pair of forthcoming insert sets in upcoming basketball products that might grab the attention of a collector or two.

In 2009-10 Panini Threads, which arrives on Dec. 16, collectors can find signed Home and Away cards, which are diecut cards printed on textured cardboard that look like jerseys. (And, of course, they are found in Home and Away versions.)

In 2009-10 Limited, which arrives on Jan. 6, there will be Glass Cleaners autographs, which are made to look like a backboard.

Each of these sets features autographs signed directly on the cards, not stickers, a major selling point with collectors these days.

See cards from each of these sets after the jump.
