The NFL’s Must-Collect Players for 2010 by Tracy Hackler

Man, we thought the 2010 NFL season would never get here. I mean, it seems like forever ago that Drew Brees and the Saints – yes, the Saints – were winning Super Bowl XLIV, setting off a celebration in the Gulf Coast region that still hasn’t ended.

Everywhere else, the euphoria quickly subsided, vanquished by the dark recesses of something called the off-season. But now that a new season has arrived, officially starting Thursday night when New Orleans hosts Minnesota in an NFC Championship Game rematch, happy days are here again.

In honor of that, we present some of our choices for the must-collect players of 2010. We’ve profiled five players here. For the complete list of 10 – you know, 10 for ’10 – check out the October issue of Beckett Sports Card Monthly, on sale everywhere next week.

Some of our selections are no-brainers, a few will leave you scratching your head and one or two will likely have you questioning our sanity (if you don’t already). Perhaps the rationale behind each pick will help our case.

Either way, here’s to another fantastic NFL season. And by all means, if you disagree with our list send us yours (readersrock@beckett.com) and you might be profiled in a future issue of the magazine.

Panini America Tabs Peyton Manning as the Face of its NFL Line by Tracy Hackler

Panini America officials on Wednesday morning made it official: Peyton Manning is the new face of the company’s NFL trading card line.

As the official spokesman and trading card ambassador for the company, Manning, the 10-time Pro Bowler and four-time league MVP, will be featured on Panini’s 2010 NFL packaging, advertising and point-of-sale initiatives including the official NFL sticker/sticker album and NFL Adrenalyn, an interactive trading card game set to debut in August.

As they do already, the company’s products will continue to include Manning’s autographs and game-worn materials. Panini will also work with Manning’s charity, The Peyback Foundation.

“I’m excited to be a part of a global brand like Panini and look forward to bringing the excitement of collecting Panini Football cards and stickers to kids with NFL Adrenalyn and the Panini NFL Sticker Album,” Manning said.

Added Panini America CEO Mark Warsop: “Peyton will be the face of our Panini Football products. He’s one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks of all time and we are glad he is leading our huddle. Peyton’s knack for throwing touchdowns is matched by Panini’s commitment to be associated with the world’s top athletes and getting kids excited about collecting NFL trading cards.”

Manning joins five-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant as a Panini spokesman and trading card ambassador.

First Impressions: 2010 Prestige Football by Tracy Hackler

Imagine my surprise this afternoon when the mail arrived and in it — about a week earlier than expected — were two boxes of 2010 Prestige Football. For a diehard football fan eaten up right now with NFL Draft fever and a bad case of Tebow mania, it was kind of like Christmas in May.

(Unfortunately, there wasn’t a Tebow to be found in the one box we opened. My football fix, however, was fixed — at least for now.)

We opened one box this afternoon for the express purpose of providing our pigskin-starved visitors with an early look at the first 2010 NFL product.  As for the second 24-pack box, we have a special Box Busters episode planned for that one, so stay tuned.

After the jump you’ll be treated to a wealthy dose of images from the product. Right now, I’ll share just a few quick thoughts on what I think is a rather pleasing start to a history-in-the-making 2010 product season.

* Prestige packs a robust amount of content in every box with 24 Rookie Cards (one per pack) and 24 inserts/parallels (one per pack). The variety of design between the base 200-card set, the 100-card Rookie subset, the inserts and the parallels serves as visual Vivarin, breaking up any monotony that might surface between the first pack and the 24th.

Card Gallery: SP Authentic NCAA Football? by Tracy Hackler

Passionate football card collector Sergio Dubois (beckett user ID Sensei322) brought to our attention last night his fascinating discovery of several gorgeous card images conceivably hailing from an as-yet-unreleased college-football-focused SP Authentic product.

The images provide a generation-spanning visual feast of 2010 rookies and legendary NFL Hall of Famers all decked out in their Saturday best. The result is a stunning display of eye candy steeped in SP Authentic’s aesthetically pleasing design principles.

No word from Upper Deck officials on when — or even if — this product will be released.

Find additional information on these images after the gallery and stay tuned to Beckett.com for additional details.

First Look: 2010 Donruss Elite Football by Tracy Hackler

Panini America officials today released images and preliminary product information on 2010 Donruss Elite Football, a longtime portfolio staple slated to release in June 16 packing four hits  (with at least one autograph guaranteed), four Rookies and 10 other inserts or parallels per box.

Elite loyalists can rest easy knowing that the product’s calling cards — Throwback Threads memorabilia cards and Passing the Torch Autographs — return in full force. The company also has secured autographs and memorabilia from some of the key contributors of New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Each case of the product should deliver at least one autograph from a group that includes Peyton Manning, Joe Namath, Brett Favre, Emmitt Smith, Drew Brees, Jimmy Clausen, Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, C.J. Spiller, Ryan Mathews and Jonathan Dwyer.

Check out the preview images after the jump.

Panini America struck a chord with collectors last week – and sent many of them across the country scrambling to scour their collections – by announcing a bounty for the 2009 Limited Pro Bowl Combo Materials card featuring Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and sequential number 44/100.

There was speculation in the collecting community at the time that the card would never be discovered. Well, the card has been discovered, from the personal collection of a Peyton Manning super collector.

Dawn McNew, a physical education teacher at Lehigh (Fla.) High School, contacted the Panini offices just a week prior the contest deadline to let company officials know that the winning card was part of her Manning collection that’s more than 1,000 cards strong.

Panini Offering $1,500+ Bounty for One Special $20 Card by Tracy Hackler

You can add 44 to the list of the most meaningful serial numbers in the sports card universe.

Panini is offering a substantial reward to the one collector either already holding or pulling the 2009 Limited Pro Bowl Combo Materials card featuring Super Bowl XLIV passers Peyton Manning and Drew Brees and, most importantly, also bearing sequential number 44/100.

The lucky collector holding that card and revealing it to Panini officials prior to the kickoff of Super Bowl XLIV on Feb. 7 will have the chance to trade that card for an exclusive Manning-Brees card sequentially numbered 1/1 and one box of every 2010 NFL product Panini produces.

Based on the company’s current 2010 production schedule, that prize haul amounts to between 10 and 15 unopened boxes with a combined suggested retail value of more than $1,500. For those wondering, the current Beckett value for the card is $20.
