The Winter Classic is almost here and fans are geared up for the match up between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on New Year’s Day.

But tomorrow, one 9-year-old boy gets to live a dream when he gets to be the 2011 Winter Classic Stick Kid, which was sponsored by Upper Deck.

A promotion was conducted last month where 50 children between the ages of 8 and 14 submitted essays as to why they should be picked.

Robert Janson of Oakton, Va., won.

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

In just 24 hours after Upper Deck announced the “Collect the Set & Win” hockey contest, the company already found a winner.

That didn’t take long at all.

As soon as Jim and AJ Ramsay heard about the promotion, they set out to win the top prize of a trip to the 2011 NHL Winter Classic in Pittsburgh.

The father and son duo were set up at the 2010 Fall Expo in Toronto, Canada when a customer told them about the contest. All they had to do was complete the 2010-11 Upper Deck Series 1 20th Anniversary 250-card insert set, which was released Wednesday.

But there’s a new product that solves that and allows the owner to take their memorabilia with them anywhere they go.

Well, as long as they’re wearing it.

Relic Wear is a new line of limited-edition bracelets, keyrings and pendants which include at least one piece of game-used sports memorabilia from some of the biggest names in baseball and hockey.

“At the moment [we’re] geared toward hockey and the Winter Olympics,” said Alex Malone, the founder of Relic Wear, via email. “[But] we will even be providing a service for collectors to send us their game used patches to be made into custom pendants for them.”

The Crosby Show by Tracy Hackler

It’s 10:25 p.m. in Dallas and Sidney Crosby just won his first Stanley Cup in Detroit. For the record, there are 2,447 Crosby items on eBay at the moment, including almost five full pages of new listings.

Compare Crosby’s showing to that of Red Wings star Henrik Zetterberg, who helped vanquish Crosby’s Penguins last year to hoist the Cup but is being force fed a little role reversal this year. He’s got 429 items for sale right now, including just 29 that are newly listed.

It would appear that another Crosby craze is upon us – and for good reason. The kid who entered the league four years ago with the kind of pomp and circumstance normally reserved for guys named Gretzky — and only guys named Gretzky – skated his first Cup Friday night. That’s huge for hockey and for the hobby.
