Collecting Vince Carter by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

Vince Carter isn’t nearly in the news as much as he used to be. I remember way back in my teens, Carter was coming out of college and he received so much press. He was followed through North Carolina until he was drafted by the Toronto Raptors.

But once Carter got to the NBA, he never got the type of attention some of the other prolific scorers in the league received.

One of Carter’s issues is that he never played for a popular team. He spent six years with Toronto and then went to the New Jersey Nets where he spent another five years. Though a good player, the first 11 years of his career occurred in obscurity.

However, Carter was never quiet in these slow-moving areas of basketball.

On Monday, he became the eighth active player to reach 20,000 points and 37th player to ever do it.

JoePa on top by himself; Reaches exclusive 400-win mark by Susan Lulgjuraj

Penn State coaching legend Joe Paterno reached 400 career wins today in dramatic fashion.

The Nittany Lions came back from a 21-point deficit to beat Northwestern 35-21 on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

Paterno became the first major Division I coach to hit the 400-win plateau. Two offensive lineman carried Paterno as he smiled and waved to the crowd in Happy Valley. It only took 45 years to get there.

“People ask me why I’ve stayed here so long, and you know what, look around, look around,” Paterno said to a crowd of 100,000-plus. “Now that the celebration’s over, let’s go beat Ohio State!”

Blake Griffin’s long-awaited NBA debut starts off right by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

More than a year after Blake Griffin was the 2009 top overall draft pick by the Los Angeles Clippers, he finally made his NBA debut.

The Oklahoma graduate, who spent last year shelved after knee surgery, had 20 points and 14 rebounds (nine offensive) in Wednesday night’s 98-88 loss to the Portland Trailblazers.

Griffin’s play gave Clippers fans something to finally cheer about.

The game didn’t start easily for Griffin. He took two fouls early in the first quarter and needed a break. But Griffin, who finished with four fouls, also didn’t play with a man worried about making contact. He was aggressive and visibly disappointed with himself when he missed a shot or made a mistake.

‘King James’ debuts with Miami Heat tonight by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

The NBA season starts tonight with one of the most anticipated games of the year, and it doesn’t include the current champions.

The Miami Heat travel to the Boston Celtics at 7:30 p.m., which will air on TNT.

Even the most casual of NBA fans want to get a look at LeBron James in his first regular-season game with the Heat. Plenty of hype surrounded Miami in the off-season, which began with a few simple words this summer.

“I’m taking my talent to South Beach,” James said in an hour-long show on ESPN in July.

He signed with Miami, which already had Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.
