Triple H at Toy Fair? That just screams “caption me” … by Chris Olds

Every once in awhile, we run across photos that just grab our attention but really don’t have any substantial hobby ties for our core of sports cards and memorabilia. But they still beg for a place.

That’s what happened when I spotted the above photo of Triple H (Paul Levesque) showing off his action figure Friday in advance of the American International Toy Fair that starts Sunday in New York.

Preview gallery: McFarlane Toys’ Cooperstown 7 SportsPicks by Chris Olds

McFarlane Toys‘ seventh series of Cooperstown Collection SportsPicks figures arrives in March, but you don’t have to wait that long to see what the toys will look like.

There will be five players in the release — Babe Ruth (third figure), Thurman Munson, Carl Yastrzemski, Tony Gwynn and Joe Morgan. All are Hall of Famers with the exception of Munson.

The highlight figure of the bunch will likely be the Ruth as he’s seen calling his shot against the Chicago Cubs in the 1932 World Series.

McFarlane Toys announced on Friday that the Gwynn chase figure will have an autographed figure base. The former San Diego Padres star will sign 100 bases.

Brett Favre makes Vikings debut with McFarlane Toys by Chris Olds

favrewhite

McFarlane Toys has unveiled its plans for Brett Favre‘s SportsPicks debut as a Minnesota Viking — toys that will arrive in stores this month.

favrepurpleThe future Hall of Famer will appear in a purple home jersey on toys found at Toys ‘R’ Us and other specialty stores, while his white road jersey figure will only be available at BigBoyzToyz.com.

The figure will cost $19.99 at the website, while the standard figures typically sell in the $10-$12 range, depending on the store.

This is the third figure in recent months to be sold as an exclusive through a website. A Ken Griffey Jr. and a Kurt Warner exclusive were previously announced, while the 21st series of the popular NFL toys will debut a new system of chase figures, some of which may include autographs.

Autographed SportsPicks? McFarlane Toys’ latest project takes things to another level by Chris Olds

mcfarlaneNEW

McFarlane Toys announced Friday evening that it is adding a new program that allows for a higher-end and specific chase aspect to its upcoming SportsPicks figure lines.

Its new “Collector Level” program has been created to give collectors something extra with the variant figures that they have come to expect with the popular toys. What’s that something extra? Anything from an alternative paint job to autographs or game-used memorabilia swatches included with the figure. As with past products, some type of variant or Collector Level figure will be found in every case.

“We’ve created this new program based on feedback we received from our fans over the years,” said Todd McFarlane, the company’s CEO. “The primary focus of this program is to create a line of collectibles that will excite you, the hard-core collector.”

There are six types of Collector Level figures  — Bronze, Silver, Gold, Premier, All-Star and MVP. Each Level matches to a limited production. Nearly every standard figure will have an alternative — a Collector Level or standard chase figure.
