Panini America unveils wrapper redemption program for NHL All-Star weekend by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

Raleigh, N.C., will be the place to be this weekend for hockey fans and hockey card collectors.

Upper Deck released its plans of the 2011 NHL All-Star Fan Fair and now Panini America’s plans are out for all to see.

One of the biggest ways card company’s give away items at these types of events is through wrapper redemption programs. It gets the customer to buy product in order to receive exclusive cards.

Panini’s redemption program highlights 1990-91 Score Hockey.

For every three packs of 2010-11 Panini NHL hobby packs a customer opens at the Panini booth, they will receive a two-card pack.

The set commemorating Score Hockey will have seven cards limited to 500 copies, but there are opportunities to get some great hits in each pack. Along with special inserts, collectors have the chance to find Rookie NHL patch autographs and other autos from players such as Sidney Crosby, Taylor Hall and Steve Yzerman.

By Andrew Tolentino | Assistant Editor

Fortifying its late-January release with proven icemen like Pavel Bure and Steve Yzerman, In The Game claims that 2010-11 Heroes and Prospects “…could be the best…ever!” AHL, CHL and International contenders bolster the checklist with the prospect of stardom in this pairing of hopeful and established hockey heroes.

Doing what they do best, ITG officials bring the game to the collector with spectacular game-used memorabilia cards from the Top Prospects Game, the Subway Series and other on-the-rink action. These, along with National Pride, Net Prospects, Prospect Trios, Quad Patch, Complete Jersey inserts justify the chase. Saturday is National Hockey Card Day in Canada by Chris Olds

Saturday might be normally reserved for “Hockey Night in Canada” but this week Saturday also marks National Hockey Card Day for Canadian fans.

As part of its celebration, Upper Deck is giving away thousands of NHCD card packs free to collectors at Canadian hobby shops and selected retail stores as part of the second-annual celebration of Canada’s unofficial national pastime.

“Hockey is the national sport in Canada so Upper Deck wanted to come up with a way to celebrate that incredible devotion,” said Chris Carlin, Upper Deck’s sports marketing manager. “We started this program last year and it was a huge success with countless hockey fans and trading card collectors visiting hobby shops and retailers across Canada. We expect the same kind of excitement this time around.”

Well, as long as they’re wearing it.

Relic Wear is a new line of limited-edition bracelets, keyrings and pendants which include at least one piece of game-used sports memorabilia from some of the biggest names in baseball and hockey.

“At the moment [we’re] geared toward hockey and the Winter Olympics,” said Alex Malone, the founder of Relic Wear, via email. “[But] we will even be providing a service for collectors to send us their game used patches to be made into custom pendants for them.”
