Let’s not jump to conclusions with Paul Henderson jersey by Chris Olds

By Russ Cohen

It’s an age-old debate. When a precious jersey or piece of memorabilia goes up for sale, why shouldn’t a card company have a chance at purchasing said item to use it however it sees fit?

Right now, the famous Game No. 8, 1972 Paul Henderson Summit Series jersey is up for grabs and the high bid is more than $131,000 with a minimum set at $142,000 and just under 25 days remaining. So with that much being bid, some people already are insisting that a trading card company has to be the bidder with deep pockets and that it is surely getting ready to cut up the jersey.

Diehard hockey fans probably already know about it, but the NHLPA has a great hockey jersey auction going right now and there are some doozies. Sidney Crosby’s jersey from the Canada vs. Germany game has topped$26,000, while Chicago’s Jonathan Toews’ Canada sweater at $2,125.

Now those aren’t the only jerseys. Alexander Ovechkin’s jersey (June 8) from the Russia vs. Czech Republic will soon go on sale as well as the Patrick Kane Team USA (Tuesday, along with some of his other teammates) worn against Switzerland.

In The Game Creates 2010 Olympic Hockey Collectibles by Tracy Hackler

The Winter Olympics happen once every four years and for as long as NHL players take part in it, the hockey collectibles market will always be a bit more exciting this time of the year. National pride takes over.

To take advantage of that product-peddling patriotism and the Vancouver games, In The Game has announced that it will be offering direct to collectors a special group of autograph and memorabilia cards beginning Feb. 5.

Cards will be produced in four different card categories – autograph cards, game-used jersey cards, game-used patch cards and autographed game-used jersey cards – and will be limited to just 10 cards of each player in each category.

All cards will go on sale Friday at the In The Game store. Orders will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so don’t miss your favorite players when they become available.

2009-10 Heroes & Prospects Packs World Junior Championship Excitement by Tracy Hackler

By Russ Cohen

The 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships will start and finish before 2009-10 ITG Heroes & Prospects is released on January 27, so the demand for some of the cards based on the key players’ on-ice performances could potentially skyrocket.

Two of the players most likely to reap the biggest benefits are Cody Hodgson and Oliver Roy.

I’ve been to the “Bunker,” home of the Brampton Battalion, and have seen firsthand how crazy the hometown fans are for Hodgson, the future Vancouver Canucks standout. A game-used fatigue/jersey of Hodgson will most certainly be a hot commodity. Although he’s coming off an injury, Hodgson is expected to play and have a sizable impact for Team Canada.

Roy is a solid goalie for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the “Q.” He has a chance to make the World Junior squad but he did play in the “Subway Super Series” and ITG has acquired the jersey rights to the “fresh” game-used memorabilia from that tournament as well as the CHL Top Prospects Game. Future top-five picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Taylor Hall (Windsor) and Tyler Seguin (Plymouth Whalers) played in the Super Series.
