Collector Goes Green with National Treasures ‘Noise Toy’ by tolentinotown

By Andrew Tolentino | Assistant Editor

Some might say that the trading card industry is notoriously not “green.” However, as featured on Panini America’s blog, Delaware collector Amarin Cogburn has proven otherwise.

Scouring the internet and seeking expertise from an engineering-minded friend, Cogburn managed to repurpose a 2007 National Treasures Football box as “noise toy.” Specifically, Cogburn created a functioning amplifier with the collectible wooden box, a soldering iron and a few spare parts along the way.

Originally intended as a tinker-based offering for a white elephant gift exchange,  the recycled high-end hobby container was a success. “The amp was  a hit among my friends and I ended up building two more in the following month,” Cogburn said on The Knight’s Lance.

Ideally, this type of DIY spirit can permeate throughout the hobby, leading to more recycled collecting ingenuity. Considering the winter weather, who is willing to make the first foil-wrapper overcoat? Continue reading

Dez’s Dirty Laundry by tolentinotown

By Andrew Tolentino | Assistant Editor

Sometimes it’s perfectly acceptable to air your dirty laundry in public. Especially when the stinky stuff was worn by an NFL athlete.

With the sharp stench of the gridiron still lingering, Dez Bryant’s first Cowboys jersey arrived at the Panini America offices on Monday. Hopefully, hobby brand manager Tracy Hackler wore gloves and clothespinned his nose as he provided the inside scoop on Dez’s dirty laundry.

The yet-to-be-febreezed football jersey arrived with game used battle scares, galore. From an authenticity standpoint though, it’s a pungently pristine piece of memorabilia, ripe for the picking. Hackler notes, “You can enjoy it now in its entirety…and in a few months on some highly collectible Panini America football card.” Continue reading

Panini’s Tracy Hackler takes back seat to real rock star by Chris Olds

We all know Beckett Media’s Panini America‘s Tracy Hackler acts like a box-busting rock star, but on Monday he took a back seat to a real rock star, Jonathan Cook lead singer for Forever The Sickest Kids.

Cook, who is a collector and Dallas Cowboys fan, is the nephew of Panini America’s Ted Barker (working the camera). He sat down with Hackler to open a box of 2010 Epix football cards for what you’ll find above.

What will they find inside? Watch and find out …

And if you’re not familiar with FTSK, you might have seen this video for their biggest hit so far on MTV or on heavy rotation awhile back.

Beckett Media alum Tracy Hackler went poking around the building — again — during his fourth day of work at Panini America … if you can call it work.

Here’s what he found.

The football fans of the bunch will undoubtedly be jealous.

Tracy Hackler first arrived at Beckett Media in 1995 before heading to Donruss a few years ago and coming back to Beckett in 2004. Now, he’s headed to Panini America.

Another long-time Beckett Media employee, Dave Sliepka, caught up with Hackler on Friday for a quick two-part interview.
