John Wall vs. Evan Turner: NBA rookies square off by Susan Lulgjuraj

By Susan Lulgjuraj | Contributing Editor

The top two draft picks from this year’s NBA Draft faced off last night. Washington’s John Wall against Philadelphia’s Evan Turner.

Wall had 29 points, 13 assists and nine steals, and played almost the entire game. Turner had nine points and six rebounds in almost 26 minutes off the bench.

While Wall is off to a quicker start than his rookies counterparts, Panini signed both players to an exclusive this summer because of a talent that is likely to sustain on the court. Plus, their draw on basketball cards doesn’t hurt.

Bright and early Monday morning, Panini America officials tipped off what promises to be a busy week by announcing that they have reached an exclusive trading card agreement with No. 4 overall pick Wesley Johnson.

To launch the relationship, Panini has arranged for Johnson to visit ESPN headquarters for an extensive media tour Monday that will include stints on seemingly every ESPN platform.

Johnson, drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves out of the University of Syracuse, last season earned Big East Player of the Year honors and was a First Team Associated Press All-American. His first mainstream NBA trading cards will be available late next month in Panini’s 2010 NBA Prestige product.

“We are excited to add Wesley Johnson as an exclusive Panini athlete,” said Scott Prusha, Panini America’s Director of Marketing. “Wesley excited Syracuse fans in college and we expect him to do the same for the Timberwolves fans. We look forward to introducing Wesley to NBA trading card collectors.”

Panini America revealed its first basketball set for 2010-11 — its sophomore season as the NBA’s lone trading card licensee — and it’s Prestige leading the way.

Set to arrive on Sept. 29, Prestige will include a rookie in every pack and each 24-pack hobby box will include one autograph, one NBA Auto Draft Class card (limited to 499 or less) and two memorabilia cards.

Eight-card packs will carry a $4 suggested retail price.

The set will mark the first cards of No. 1 overall pick John Wall as well as autographs from Panini-exclusives Evan Turner and Wesley Johnson. It also will include the first Knicks autographs of Amar’e Stoudemire as well as debut autographs of Chris Bosh and Carlos Boozer in their new uniforms.
